* The No. 2 Maryland men's lacrosse returns to the friendly confines of Byrd Stadium this Saturday as the undefeated Terps (4-0) play host to ACC rival No. 13 North Carolina at 1 p.m. The Terps have risen to No. 2 in the USILA poll, the team's highest ranking in two years as they were No. 1 for the week of March 26, 2001. Maryland will depart for its spring break trip to Florida immediately following Saturday's game. The Terps will take on Butler on Tuesday, March 25 in Boca Raton, Fla., at the St. Andrew's School.

* Please note for the 2003 season, fans may sit only on the South side of Byrd Stadium, the Tyser Tower press box side, due to impending construction on the Gossett Football Team House. Tickets are available by calling 301-314-7070.

* Maryland comes off a solid 16-4 victory at Stony Brook last Saturday as every member of the active roster played. Nine Long Island natives made their return home a happy one including senior Mike Mollot (Holbrook, N.Y.). He led the way with five points on a goal and four assists. Mollot tallied eight assists in two games last week and leads the team in helpers with 10. He ranks fourth in the nation in assists, averaging 2.50 per game. Mollot is also now 11th all-time in career assists with the Terps with 86.

* In the win over Stony Brook, six Terps scored two goals including graduate attacker Brian Hunt (West Chester, Pa.), senior midfielder Jamie Daue (Lutherville, Md.), sophomore middie Ian Healy (Great Falls, Va.), senior middie Sean Leary (Troy, Mich.), sophomore attacker Andrew Schwartzman (Owings Mills, Md.) and junior middie Justin Smith (University Park, Md.). All three members of the Terps' second midfield -- Daue, Healy and Smith scored twice. For Daue, the goals were his first of the season; for Healy, two in a game marked a career-high and Smith now has 21 goals in the last 11 games he has played in, dating to his UMBC career.

* No. 13 North Carolina is 4-2, 1-0 in the ACC after a 14-9 win over Duke, Wednesday night in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels have beaten No. 24 Bucknell (13-3), lost to No. 14 Navy (9-8 in 4OT), lost to No. 11 Notre Dame (10-8), beaten Ohio State (9-8) and Denver (10-6), last Saturday at Fetzer Field. * Brian Hunt leads the scoring parade with 10 goals and five assists for 15 points. Hunt, who came to Maryland after graduating from Yale last spring, has 14 career hat tricks dating back to his career with the Bulldogs after posting one each in the first two games this season. He has scored a point in 38 consecutive games he has played in and has 143 career points (3.3 PPG).

* Senior midfielder Ryan Moran (Setauket, N.Y.) and freshman attacker Joe Walters (Rochester, N.Y.) each poured in four goals to lead the Terps' offense in last week's 14-8 victory over Bucknell and are tied for second in goals with nine. For Moran, the four goals set a new career-high. After a goal at Stony Brook, he now has all 24 of his goals in his last 15 games, dating back to last season -- after never scoring his first two years with Maryland. For Walters, the Bucknell outburst marked the second straight game the left-handed attacker netted four goals, as he also scored four at Towson (3/8) and was named the WMAR-TV Star of the Game and Maryland Student-Athlete of the Week. Walters, who also had two assists vs. Bucknell, stands second on the Terps' scoring chart with 14 points on nine goals and five assists.

* Senior midfielder and Tewaaraton Trophy candidate Mike Mollot moved into 11th place on Maryland's all-time career assist chart with four helpers vs. Stony Brook and now has 86 for his career. Earlier this season, Mollot moved into 19th on the Terps' career scoring chart with two points vs. Duke. He now has 145 points on 59 goals and 86 assists in three-plus seasons.

* The Terps' extra-man unit has been sensational early in this season scoring on more than 54 percent of its opportunities. Maryland has scored 13 goals on 24 chances led by Ryan Moran, who has three EMG's. Brian Hunt, Dan LaMonica (Parkton, Md.) and Joe Walters each have two extra-man tallies as well. In comparison, last season the Terps scored just 17 extra-man goals the entire season, on 63 chances (27 percent). The defense has held opponents to just five EMG's on 26 chances (19.2 percent).

Defense holds Opponents Down
* The Terps' defense, the nation's best last year allowing seven goals a game, and has continued its prowess, allowing 6.75 goals per game, backstopped by preseason honorable mention goalie Danny McCormick (McLean, Va.). Preseason first-team All-Americans Michael Howley and Chris Passavia have teamed with Lee Zink (Rowayton, Conn.) and defensive middies Brett Harper (Columbus, Ohio) and Paul Gillette (Severna Park, Md.) to keep opponents at bay. Gillette leads the team in groundballs with 19, while Harper tops in caused turnovers with nine.

* The Terps' defense has continued to be stellar as it has had several runs of holding its opponents scoreless.

* Against Duke, the Terps held the then-No. 7 Blue Devils without a goal for 38 minutes spanning the final three quarters and to just one goal for nearly 50 minutes from midway in the first quarter until late in the fourth quarter.

* Against Towson, Maryland held the Tigers without a goal for almost 18 minutes from the second to the third quarter and with just one goal from the late second to late fourth quarters.

* After a high-scoring 6-6 first quarter with Bucknell, Maryland buckled down and held the Bison off the scoreboard for more than 30 minutes and nearly shut them out for the second and third quarters before a fluke Bison goal with one second left in the third quarter.

* Maryland kept host Stony Brook to just one goal in the first 33:11 of the game in building a 15-1 lead in the early third quarter. With the score tied 1-1, Maryland went on a 14-goal run holding Stony Brook scoreless for 27:32.

* Overall, the Terps have outscored their opponents 55-27 (13.75-6.75) per game -- a seven goal margin, but even more amazing is that opponents have just seven goals total in the second and third quarters combined and 14 total for the second, third and fourth quarters. In contrast the Terps have 33 goals in the final three periods (a 19 goal margin).

Mollot Moves Up Terp Career Charts
* Senior captain Mike Mollot moved into 19th place all-time on Maryland's scoring charts in the program's storied lacrosse history against Duke and now has 145 points. With two points vs. Duke, he passed Dave Dempsey (1970-74), who had 134. Mollot currently has 59 goals and 86 assists for 145 points in three-plus seasons.

Terps Move Butler Game to Florida; Face Georgetown on Apr. 28
* The Maryland-Butler game originally scheduled for April 28 in College Park will now be played on March 25 at 7 p.m. in Boca Raton, Fla., at the St. Andrew's School. Both teams will be in Florida during spring break and will play the game during their time in the Sunshine State. It will be the Terps' second trip to the Sunshine State in three years, as they played the 2001 ACC Championships in Orlando.

* It will be the Terps' first "spring break" trip to Florida since the early 1980's, as they made an annual trip their under coaches Buddy Beardmore and Dino Mattesich.

* With the movement of the game with Butler, the Maryland-Georgetown game has now been rescheduled for April 28 at Byrd Stadium at 7 p.m.. The Terps and Hoyas were planning to open the 2003 season on Feb. 22, but the game was postponed due to unplayable field conditions at Maryland's Artificial Turf Facility. It will be the first regular-season game between the teams.

Six Terps Named Preseason All-Americans
* The Maryland men's lacrosse team has placed six players on the Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook Preseason All-America list. Senior defenseman Michael Howley and junior defender Chris Passavia were both named to the preseason first team. Last season Howley was a USILA second-team All-American and Passavia was a member of the third team.

* Senior midfield/attackman Mike Mollot was named a second team preseason All-American after he was a USILA second teamer last season. Junior attacker Dan LaMonica was also named to the second team. Last season, he was a USILA honorable mention All-American.

* Goalie Danny McCormick was named to the preseason honorable mention list after being a USILA honorable mention All-American last year. Newcomer attackman Brian Hunt, who comes to Maryland as a graduate student after playing at Yale, was also named a preseason honorable mention All-American as he makes his debut as a Terp this spring. Hunt missed all of last year with a broken ankle.

* It is believed that the 2003 Maryland men's lacrosse team is in the process of making NCAA sports history as the Terps have a roster unlike any other in the history of college athletics. Maryland has a roster that has four players who led their respective teams in scoring in their last seasons of action. It is still being researched by the NCAA, but it is believed that this is the first instance of its kind in any sport.

* Maryland returns its own leading scorer from 2002 in senior Mike Mollot, who had 46 points on 23 goals and 23 assists last season. The Terps have added three new players who join the team from other Division I programs where each of them led their respective teams in scoring in their last year of action.

* Graduate student Brian Hunt topped Yale's scoring chart in 2001 and finished fourth in the nation in points with 58 on 28 goals and 30 assists.

* Joe Parker, who is also a graduate student, played one year of lacrosse at Colgate last season, where he also led the team in points with 48 on 29 goals and 19 assists.

* Finally, junior transfer Justin Smith, who comes to the Terps from UMBC, was the Retrievers' leading scorer last season with 24 points on 18 goals and six assists.

2003 Schedule Notes
* For 2003, Maryland has added several new opponents including Georgetown, Stony Brook, Butler and Notre Dame. The Terps will also continue their long-time rivalries with ACC foes Duke, North Carolina and Virginia along with local battles against Johns Hopkins, Navy, Towson and UMBC.

* "We are very excited about our schedule for the spring of 2003," said Dave Cottle, who enters his second season at the helm of the Terps' program. "We feel we have added some games against top-quality opponents that make it one of the toughest schedules in the nation."

* The Terps will appear on the WMAR Channel 2 Television Game of the Week for a school-record three occasions. Maryland was featured in the first game of the package as they traveled to Towson on March 8 and won 12-8. The greatest rivalry in lacrosse renews once again on WMAR for the sixth year in a row as Johns Hopkins comes to College Park for a Saturday, April 12, prime time match-up. The Terps will also play in a televised prime-time game as they host UMBC on April 25 at 7:30 p.m.

* Maryland was scheduled to open the WMAR broadcast schedule on March 1 against Duke, but the game was unable to be aired due to its rescheduled date and time on March 2.

* The Terps take on seven teams that finished in last season's final USILA/STX Poll (No. 1 Johns Hopkins, No. 3 Virginia, No. 4 Georgetown, No. 9 Duke, No. 12 North Carolina, No. 15 Navy and No. 18 Towson). They also play five teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2002: Duke, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, Stony Brook and Virginia.

* The games with Georgetown, Stony Brook, Butler and Notre Dame will all be the first regular-season meetings against those teams. The Terps have faced the Hoyas, Bulldogs and Fighting Irish each once before, all in NCAA Tournament games.

* The ACC Tournament will be held in Charlottesville, Va., on April 18 and 20, 2003 at the University of Virginia, the site of the Terps' last ACC title in 1998.

Terps' 78th Season of Lacrosse
* The Terps, now in the fourth season of the new century, have an all-time record of 628-201-4, dating back to the first varsity team in 1924 (a team was not fielded in 1944 and 1945 due to World War II). Maryland has finished every one of its previous 77 seasons with a .500 or better record, including last season when the Terps went 9-4. The program's 600th win came against Duke on April 21, 2000, 7-6 in the ACC Semifinals at Byrd Stadium.

* In the decade of the 1990s, Maryland recorded its most wins in any decade with a 95-47 record. The .669 winning percentage matched Maryland's win percentage of the 1980s when the Terps went 83-41 and also compiled a .669 win percentage. This decade, the Terps are now 37-12 (.755).
