Maryland Gymnasts To Travel To New Hampshire For EAGL Championships

March 24, 2003

  • After finishing off regular season with a 12-9 record, which included a 5-5 run against EAGL (East Atlantic Gymnastics League) opponents, the Terps will travel to Durham, N.H. for the eighth annual EAGL Championship Meet. The competition is set for Saturday, Mar. 29 in the Whittemore Center on the campus of the University of New Hampshire. The meet starts at 6:00 p.m. The team will leave College Park, Md. at noon on Thursday, Mar. 27 for the weekend compeition which will include the annual EAGL awards banquet.

  • Eight schools make up the EAGL, which has already developed a solid reputation of being one of the most well-balanced leagues in the NCAA Division I gymnastics. North Carolina, NC State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Towson, New Hampshire, West Virginia and Maryland are contenders.

  • In 2002, Maryland finished third at the Championships with a score of 194.825, behind West Virginia and champion North Carolina. UNC shattered the meet scoring record in winning its first ever EAGL championship ever. Lisa Mealey led Maryland to its third place finish. She took fifth in the all-around (39.375) and tied for sixth place on bars (9.875). She also tied for ninth place on floor exercise (9.90).

  • Currently, Terps are third in the conference with a score of 195.250, having turned their season around following the win against West Virginia on Feb. 14. The win over the Mountaineers fueled the thirst for the sweeps at two 4-way meets, the first on Feb. 22 against Texas Women's University, James Madison and George Washington and the second on Mar. 8 against North Carolina, GWU and Pennsylvania. The Terps really came out of their shell on Mar. 12 against GWU, when they notched the second highest score in school history, a 196.650.

  • Led by a strong freshman class, Terps are hunting for their first conference championship this season. Two-time EAGL Gymnast of the Week, freshman Rachel Martinez has been exciting to watch; she has notched five first place finishes in all-around competition in 2003. In her first year, Martinez also tied the school record for the best all-around score with a 39.625 on Mar. 15 against Rutgers. Currently, she is the second best gymnast in the EAGL, as measured by her 39.250 regional qualifying average score. Her personal bests have been four 9.9s on the vault, a 9.9 on bars, a 9.9 on the beam and a 9.95 on the floor.

  • Freshman Kristi Skowronski has quietly but surely, emerged as a big threat to opponents. Joining Martinez as the only other all-around competitor on the team. Skowronski's highest score is a 39.250. Strongest on the uneven bars, Skowronski has posted back-to-back 9.9s on the event at the Mar. 8 and Mar. 12 meets.

  • Forced to redshirt 2002 due to an ankle injury, sophomore Mandy Pascual is up and swinging between the bars again. Posting a school record, 9.925 against GWU on the bars, Pascual has maintained her consistency on this event. Another Terp suiting up this season is junior Rachel Sibert. After missing action due to a shoulder injury, Sibert has provided top scores on the vault and the bars.

  • Junior Sarah Hoenig is the tied for first place in the EAGL on the beam. A 2002 NCAA Regional Participant, Hoenig surpassed her former career-high 9.9 on the beam with back-to-back 9.925s against GWU and Rutgers. The mark ties Hoenig for the third highest beam score set by any Maryland gymnast. Hoenig also earned EAGL Specialist of the Week honors for the week of Mar. 17 for her consistency on the beam and the floor. Other 2003 highlights included co-captain Katherine Schroeder's 9.9 on the floor. With the score, Schroeder gracefully entered into the 9.9 echelons in her third year, credit to her highly energized floor routine.
