* Both teams come into the game with 5-1 records. The Terps defeated Butler, 18-9, on Tuesday night down in Boca Raton, Fla., as part of their spring break week in the Sunshine State. Maryland's attack line totaled eight of the 18 goals and finished with a combined 13 points in the win. Junior Dan LaMonica (Parkton, Md.) became the 31st player in Maryland's storied lacrosse history to pass the 100-point plateau as a racked up two goals and three assists for five points. He enters the Virginia game with 102 points. Both graduate Brian Hunt (West Chester, Pa.) and Joe Walters (Rochester, N.Y.) each tallied hat tricks and added assists for four points apiece. Hunt and Walters are tied for the team-lead in goals (14) and points (20). Fourteen different Terps recorded points in the victory. Ryan Moran (Setauket, N.Y.) and Matt Urlock (Lutherville, Md.) each scored two goals and Tewaaraton Trophy candidate defenseman Michael Howley (Wantagh, N.Y.) scored his fourth career goal and first of the year on a midfield run to the goal.
* Junior defensive midfielder Paul Gillette (Severna Park, Md.), added to his team-high groundball total of 32 with a career-high nine GB's, including five in the first quarter. Junior Drew Virk (Ross, Calif.) had his best day as a Terp winning 11-of-17 face-offs and corraling eight groudballs in his most extensive playing time.
* Virginia, which was ranked No. 1 prior to last week, comes into the game after suffering its first loss of the year, 8-7 defeat at Johns Hopkins last Saturday night. The Cavaliers rallied back from a 5-0 deficit at the end of the first quarter to come within one goal on two occasions in fourth quarter as leading-scorer Chris Rotelli scored both of his goals in the game. Rotelli tops team with 15 goals and 21 points. Sophomore attackers John Christmas and Joe Yevoli are tied for second in scoring with 19 points. Virginia opened the year strong knocking off both of last year's national championship game teams on the road, winning at Syracuse (16-15 on March 1) and at Princeton (10-7 on March 8). They have also beaten Drexel (19-8), Notre Dame (14-8) and Towson (10-2).
The Series With Virginia
* The Maryland-Virginia rivalry is the third-longest in Terrapin lacrosse history with Maryland holding a 40-28 advantage, dating to the first game -- a Terps' 10-1 victory on April 24, 1926. The 40 wins are the third-highest number of victories Maryland has against any team. The Terps have defeated Duke 50 times and Navy 47 times.

* The rivals have met twice every year for six years in a row from 1996 to 2001 before the streak ended last season, as they did not play in the ACC Tournament. Virginia won last season's only meeting 11-10 at Byrd Stadium on March 30, 2001, as John Christmas scored four goals for the Cavs in the win.
* Maryland broke a five-game losing streak against Virginia with a 12-8 win in the ACC Tournament Semifinals on April 20, 2001, in Orlando. In the last game at Klockner Stadium between the teams, then-No. 1 Maryland saw its perfect 7-0 start to the season come to an end with a 7-2 loss at Charlottesville on March 31.
* In 2000, Virginia topped the Terps 11-6 on March 31 and 11-7 in the ACC Championship at Byrd Stadium on April 23.
* The Terps captured their first ACC Tournament championship defeating Virginia, 14-11 in Charlottesville on April 19, 1998, the same year Maryland won its last regular-season title with a win over Virginia, 14-9 on March 28.
* This year the ACC Tournament returns to Charlottesville for the first time since that 1998 season, when the Terps claimed their last championship.
* During the 1990s, Virginia won nine of the 16 meetings. Half of those games were decided by one goal with each team winning four of the cliff-hangers.
* Maryland has won all three meetings in the NCAA Tournament. The Terps topped the Cavaliers in a pair of first round game in 1978 and 1983 and won a 1997 quarterfinal game, 10-9.
Individual Terps Vs. Virginia
* With the Terps and Wahoos playing five times over the previous three seasons, five Maryland players have scored against Virginia.
* Dan LaMonica leads the scoring parade with five goals and four assists for nine points. Mike Mollot (Holbrook, N.Y.) also has five goals and has a total of seven points. Each posted hat tricks in the ACC Semifinal win in Orlando in 2001 and each scored a goal in last season's game.
* Matt Urlock has five career goals against the Cavaliers scoring two goals in each game played in 2000 and once more last season.
* Virginia native Mat Brock (Manakin-Sabot, Va.) and Willy Passavia (Stony Brook, N.Y.) also have goals vs. Virginia.
The Coaching Match-up
* Maryland head coach Dave Cottle has a 3-6 record vs. Virginia. He went 3-5 vs. Virginia while he was the coach at Loyola, but none of the games came against a Dom Starsia-led team. Prior to last season, last time Cottle coached against Virginia came in 1991, finishing a run of eight games in a nine-year span.
* Both Starsia and Cottle began their head coaching careers in 1983, Cottle at Loyola and Starsia at Brown. Despite both coaches running major programs for the last 20 years, they have only coached against each other five times with Starsia winning four of the five games, including his last game at Brown, a 19-12 win in the NCAA Tournament first round in 1992.
* Cottle is currently the third winningest active coach in the country with a 72.2 win percentage with a record of 195-75. Starsia has won 71.3 percent of his games at Brown and Virginia (216-87 record).
On The Offensive, Terps Scoring At High Rate
* No. 7 Maryland has continued its winning ways with a high-scoring offense that is tallying 13.17 goals per game to rank No. 4 in the nation in goals per game. The Terps have posted at least 12 goals in every victory this season with a high of 18 last Tuesday vs. Butler in Florida.
* Saturday's game pits two of the top five scoring teams in the country as Virginia ranks No. 5 in goals per game, netting 12.67 per game.
* Brian Hunt and Joe Walters lead the scoring parade with 14 goals and six assists for 20 points. Hunt, who came to Maryland after graduating from Yale last spring, has 15 career hat tricks dating back to his career with the Bulldogs after posting three this season, most recently vs. Butler on Tuesday. He has scored a point in 40 consecutive games he has played in and has 148 career points (3.3 PPG). Hunt's 148 career points is second to only Mike Mollot in career points among players in the ACC.
* Left-handed attacker Walters posted his third hat trick of the year vs. Butler to go with four-goal efforts vs. Bucknell and Towson. He was named the WMAR-TV Star of the Game and Maryland Student-Athlete of the Week after the Towson game.
* Senior midfielder and Tewaaraton Trophy candidate Mike Mollot moved into a tie for 10th place on Maryland's all-time career assist chart with and assist vs. Butler and now has 89 for his career. Mollot has posted an assist in 17 consecutive games dating to last season's third game vs. Duke. He also stands 19th on the Terps' all-time career scoring chart with 150 points and can move up to 16th with four more points. He now has 150 points on 61 goals and 89 assists in three-plus seasons. Moran, set a new career-high with four goals vs. Bucknell this season on March 11. the four goals set a new career-high. He now has all 27 of his goals in his last 17 games, dating back to last season -- after never scoring his first two years with Maryland.
* The Terps' extra-man unit has been sensational early in this season scoring on more than 47 percent of its opportunities. Maryland has scored 15 goals on 32 chances led by Ryan Moran, who has four EMG's. Joe Walters has three and Brian Hunt and Dan LaMonica each have two extra-man tallies as well. In comparison, last season the Terps scored just 17 extra-man goals the entire season, on 63 chances (27 percent). The defense has held opponents to just 11 EMG's on 36 chances (30.6 percent).
Defense Holds Opponents Down
* The Terps' defense, the nation's best last year allowing seven goals a game, and has continued its prowess, allowing 7.67 goals per game, backstopped by preseason honorable mention goalie Danny McCormick (McLean, Va.). Preseason first-team All-Americans Michael Howley and Chris Passavia (Stony Brook, N.Y.) have teamed with Lee Zink (Rowayton, Conn.) and defensive middies Brett Harper (Columbus, Ohio) and Paul Gillette (Severna Park, Md.) to keep opponents at bay. Gillette leads the team in groundballs with 32, while Harper tops in caused turnovers with 14.
* Overall, the Terps have outscored their opponents 79-47 (13.17-7.67) per game -- a 5.5 goal margin, but even more amazing is that opponents have just seven goals total in the second quarter and nine in the third quarter for a combined total of 16 for the second and third quarters. In contrast the Terps have 29 goals in the middle periods (a 13 goal margin).
* The Terps' defense has continued to be stellar as it has had several runs of holding its opponents scoreless.
* Against Duke, the Terps held the then-No. 7 Blue Devils without a goal for 38 minutes spanning the final three quarters and to just one goal for nearly 50 minutes from midway in the first quarter until late in the fourth quarter.
* Against Towson, Maryland held the Tigers without a goal for almost 18 minutes from the second to the third quarter and with just one goal from the late second to late fourth quarters.
* After a high-scoring 6-6 first quarter with Bucknell, Maryland buckled down and held the Bison off the scoreboard for more than 30 minutes and nearly shut them out for the second and third quarters before a fluke Bison goal with one second left in the third quarter.
* Maryland kept host Stony Brook to just one goal in the first 33:11 of the game in building a 15-1 lead in the early third quarter. With the score tied 1-1, Maryland went on a 14-goal run holding Stony Brook scoreless for 27:32.
* The Terps kept Butler scoreless for a stretch of 24:32 from late in the second quarter until early in the fourth quarter.

With two points vs. Duke, he passed Dave Dempsey (1970-74), who had 134. Mollot currently has 61 goals and 89 assists for 150 points in three-plus seasons. He cane move up to 18th a two points vs. Virginia and to 16th with four more points.

Leading Scorers All Around

It is still being researched by the NCAA, but it is believed that this is the first instance of its kind in any sport.
* Maryland returns its own leading scorer from 2002 in senior Mike Mollot, who had 46 points on 23 goals and 23 assists last season.
