Could It Be 6-5 Again? No. 4 Terps Head To No. 16 Navy This Saturday

* Could it happen again? Amazingly, for the last four years the Terps have downed Navy by the identical score of 6-5. Never before has Maryland played a team to the same exact score in four straight match-ups. This Saturday afternoon the teams will have a chance to break the uncanny trend as they face-off at noon at Rip Miller Field on the grounds at the United State Naval Academy. The game will be aired live on WMUCSports.com and over the radio on WMUC (88.1 FM).

* SPECIAL INFORMATION FOR FANS GOING TO THE GAME AT NAVY: Vehicles without DOD stickers will not be admitted onto Academy grounds. Fans should park on the press box side of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and take the free shuttle bus over to the Naval Academy. Fans are encouraged to purchase their tickets at the blue ticket booth located at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium to quicken the admittance process once at Rip Miller Field.

* No. 4 Maryland (6-1 overall) comes into the game fresh off a huge 8-7 conference victory over then-No. 2 Virginia last Saturday at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville. It was the Terps' first win at Virginia since the 1998 ACC Championship game and the first regular-season win in Charlottesville since 1989. Freshman sensation Joe Walters (Rochester, N.Y.) posted his fourth hat trick of the season including the game-winning eighth goal in the win. he now has a team-high 18 goals and 24 points. The Terps' defense was stellar in limiting the high-powered Cavaliers scoreless for a span of 33:06 while going on a 7-0 run spanning the first through third quarters. Goalie Danny McCormick (McLean, Va.) was tremendous in goal making 15 saves including a game-saving one off a John Christmas shot with 49 seconds and then picked off a Virginia pass with about 20 seconds remaining. After the game, head coach Dave Cottle said. "This was our best defensive effort of the season. When you play a potent offense like that you have to be aware every minute of the game. We did a great job of defensively in transition and didn't give up a lot of breaks."

* No. 16 Navy (4-4) enters Saturday's game coming off a back-to-back heartbreaking losses last week. The Midshipmen fell to unbeaten Georgetown, 4-3, in overtime last Sunday on a wet day mixed with rain and snow. Georgetown's Trevor Walker scored with 1:40 left in the first overtime for the winner after Navy's Jon Birsner scored with 1:29 left in regulation to send the game to the extra session. Navy also lost to armed forces rival Air Force last Tuesday in Annapolis, 8-6. Navy has beaten Stony Brook (10-6), North Carolina (9-8 in 4 OT), Ohio State (13-10) and Marist (12-1 in a game shortened to three quarters due to weather. In addition to the losses to Georgetown and Air Force, the Mids have also fell to Massachusetts (10-9) and Rutgers (13-8). Ian Dingman leads the team in scoring with 17 goals and 10 assists for 27 points.

Gillette Named ACC Player Of The Week
* Junior defensive midfielder Paul Gillette (Millersville, Md.) was named ACC Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week after leading the Terrapins to a 2-0 week including an upset of No. 2 Virginia on Saturday at Klockner Stadium.

* He keyed Maryland's 18-9 win over Butler on Tuesday with a career-high nine groundballs. He also added an assist in the win as he continued his solid defense. Against No. 2 Virginia, Gillette was again a star on defense in helping the Terrapins to hold the Virginia offense scoreless for 33:06 spanning the first three quarters. He scooped up four groundballs. Gillette also assisted the go-ahead goal, which gave Maryland the 3-2 lead.

* On the year, Gillette has a team-high 36 groundballs as well as a goal and three assists and 11 caused turnovers.

* The Maryland-Navy rivalry is the second-longest in Terrapin lacrosse history with Maryland holding a 48-28-1 advantage, dating to 1924. The 48 wins are the second-highest number of victories Maryland has against any team. Maryland has defeated Duke 50 times.

* Maryland has won the last 10 meetings in the series including four straight 6-5 decisions in the last four games: at Maryland on April 8, 2000 and April 5, 2002, and at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium in Annapolis on April 10, 1999 and again on April 7, 2001.

* In last year's game, Mike Morsell scored three goals for the Terps as Maryland held off a furious rally by Navy as they scored the game's final two goals to make it 6-5. Maryland's Chris Passavia (Stony Brook, N.Y.) forced Navy's Ben Bailey to turn over the ball in the waning seconds to preserve the win. Bailey scored three times for the Midshipmen.

* The Terps' last defeat at the hands of the Middies in came 1992, when Navy won 11-3.

* During the 1990s, Maryland won nine of the 10 meetings.

* Maryland has also won all four meetings in the NCAA Tournament. The Terps captured their last national championship in 1975 with a 20-13 win over Navy. Maryland also defeated Navy in NCAA semifinal games in 1971, 1976 and 1979.

Individual Terps Vs. Navy
* No member of the Terps has ever been involved in a Maryland-Navy game in which the final score wasn't 6-5, meaning scoring has been at a premium. With that in mind, only five Terps have scored against the Middies during their careers.

* Dan LaMonica (Parkton, Md.) netted the game-winning goal and an assist in the last game at Navy in 2001. Last season, he scored a goal and racked up three assists in the win at Byrd Stadium. Ryan Moran (Setauket, N.Y.) and Mike Mollot (Holbrook, N.Y.) each scored in last year's game as well.

* Matt Urlock (Lutherville, Md.) scored the game-tying goal to make it 5-5 in the 2000 game, as Maryland went on to win, 6-5.

* Head coach Dave Cottle has a 2-0 lifetime record against Navy. In addition to last year's win with Maryland, Cottle led Loyola to a 19-8 victory over Navy in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 1993. Last year's game was the first between Cottle and Navy's Richie Meade as head coaches.

On The Offensive, Terps Scoring At High Rate
* No. 4 Maryland has continued its winning ways with a high-scoring offense that is tallying 12.43 goals per game to rank No. 4 in the nation in goals per game. The Terps have posted at least 12 goals in five of their six victories this season with a high of 18 vs. Butler in Florida on March 25.

* Joe Walters and Brian Hunt (West Chester, Pa.) lead the scoring parade. Walters tops the club with 18 goals and 24 points through seven games. The left-handed attacker Walters posted his fourth hat trick of the year at Virginia and his second four-point game in a row coming on the heel of the Butler game. He also posted four-goal efforts vs. Bucknell and Towson. He was named the WMAR-TV Star of the Game and Maryland Student-Athlete of the Week after the Towson game.

* A Tewaaraton Trophy "Player to Watch," Hunt came to Maryland after graduating from Yale last spring, has 15 career hat tricks dating back to his career with the Bulldogs after posting three this season, most recently vs. Butler on March 25. His 40-game point scoring streak came to an end at Virginia as he was held off scoring sheet for the first time since his sixth college game in 1999. He had scored a point in 40 consecutive games which he played in and has 148 career points (3.2 PPG). Hunt's 148 career points is second to only Mike Mollot in career points among players in the ACC.

* Senior midfielder and Tewaaraton Trophy candidate Mike Mollot moved into a tie for 10th place on Maryland's all-time career assist chart with and assist vs. Butler and now has 89 for his career. He also stands 18th on the Terps' all-time career scoring chart with 152 points after he scored two goals at Virginia. He now has 152 points on 63 goals and 89 assists in three-plus seasons. His 152 points are the most among all active players in the ACC.

* Senior midfielder Ryan Moran has 11 goals to rank third on the team in goals after scoring once vs. Butler. Moran, set a new career-high with four goals vs. Bucknell this season on March 11. the four goals set a new career-high. He now has all 26 of his goals in his last 18 games, dating back to last season -- after never scoring his first two years with Maryland.

* Junior Dan LaMonica has seven goals and six assists for 13 points. He became the 31st Terp to pass the 100-point plateau with two goals and three assists vs. Butler on march 25. He now has 103 career points on 47 goals and 56 assists in two-plus years of action. he ranks fifth among active ACC players in career scoring, and first among juniors.

* The Terps' extra-man unit has been sensational early in this season scoring on more than 42 percent of its opportunities. Maryland has scored 16 goals on 38 chances led by Ryan Moran, who has four EMG's. Joe Walters has three and Brian Hunt, Dan LaMonica and Mike Mollot each have two extra-man tallies as well. In comparison, last season the Terps scored just 17 extra-man goals the entire season, on 63 chances (27 percent). The defense has held opponents to just 12 EMG's on 40 chances (30.0 percent).

Defense Holds Opponents Down
* The Terps' defense, the nation's best last year allowing seven goals a game, and has continued its prowess, allowing 7.67 goals per game, backstopped by preseason honorable mention goalie Danny McCormick . Preseason first-team All-Americans Michael Howley (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Chris Passavia (Stony Brook, N.Y.) have teamed with Lee Zink (Rowayton, Conn.) and defensive middies Brett Harper (Columbus, Ohio) and Paul Gillette to keep opponents at bay. Gillette leads the team in groundballs with 36, while Harper tops in caused turnovers with 15.

* Against Virginia, the Terps shutdown what was the fifth-highest scoring offense in the country and held the Cavaliers to just seven goals. Maryland limited the Virginia attack to four goals on 17 shots with Howley, Passavia and Zink pressuring the attackers.

* Overall, the Terps have outscored their opponents 87-53 (12.43-7.57) per game -- a 4.9 goal margin, but even more amazing is that opponents have just seven goals total in the second quarter and 11 in the third quarter for a combined total of 18 for the second and third quarters. In contrast the Terps have 45 goals in the middle periods (a 27 goal margin).

* The Terps' defense has continued to be stellar as it has had several runs of holding its opponents scoreless.

* Against Duke, the Terps held the then-No. 7 Blue Devils without a goal for 38 minutes spanning the final three quarters and to just one goal for nearly 50 minutes from midway in the first quarter until late in the fourth quarter.

* Against Towson, Maryland held the Tigers without a goal for almost 18 minutes from the second to the third quarter and with just one goal from the late second to late fourth quarters.

* After a high-scoring 6-6 first quarter with Bucknell, Maryland buckled down and held the Bison off the scoreboard for more than 30 minutes and nearly shut them out for the second and third quarters before a fluke Bison goal with one second left in the third quarter.

* Maryland kept host Stony Brook to just one goal in the first 33:11 of the game in building a 15-1 lead in the early third quarter. With the score tied 1-1, Maryland went on a 14-goal run holding Stony Brook scoreless for 27:32.

* The Terps kept Butler scoreless for a stretch of 24:32 from late in the second quarter until early in the fourth quarter.

* Maryland blanked Virginia for a spell of 33:06 from the mid-first quarter until 4:14 left in the third quarter. Over that time, the Terps reeled off seven consecutive goals to build a 7-2 lead.

Mollot Moves Up Career Charts
* Senior captain Mike Mollot moved into 18th place all-time on Maryland's scoring charts in the program's storied lacrosse history with two goals at Virginia and now has 152 points. With those goals, he passed Mike Hynes (1974-77), who had 151. Mollot currently has 63 goals and 89 assists for 152 points in three-plus seasons. He can move up to 16th two points vs. Navy and to 15th with four more points.

* Mollot became the 30th player in Maryland history to surpass the 100-point plateau with the seven points against Towson on March 9, 2002.

* Mollot moved into a tie for 10th place on the school's all-time career assist list with an assist vs. Butler. He currently has 89 career assists and can move to ninth with three more helpers.

* Junior Dan LaMonica became the 31st Terp with 100-plus points in his career as he tallied two goals and added three assists vs. Butler on March 25. He now has 103 career points on 47 goals and 56 assists in two-plus seasons.

* Graduate student Brian Hunt piled up 128 points in his three seasons at Yale and ranks 10th all-time in Bulldog history in scoring. He had 78 goals and 50 assists from 1999-2001 with Yale. With the Terps, Hunt has scored 14 goals and added six assists in his Maryland debut and now has 148 career points on 92 goals and 56 assists.

Howley & Mollot Up For Tewaaraton
* Sixteen of the most talented male and female collegiate varsity lacrosse players in the United States and additional "players to watch" have been selected as candidates for the third annual Tewaaraton Award, the most coveted and prestigious award a varsity lacrosse player can receive and a symbol of excellence in college lacrosse. The Foundation committee honors Native American heritage with the name "Tewaaraton," the name the Mohawk nation gave to their game and the progenitor of present day lacrosse and has received approval from the Mohawk Council of Elders.

Terps Face Georgetown on Apr. 28
* The Maryland-Georgetown game has been rescheduled for April 28 at Byrd Stadium at 7 p.m.. The Terps and Hoyas were planning to open the 2003 season on Feb. 22, but the game was postponed due to unplayable field conditions at Maryland's Artificial Turf Facility. It will be the first regular-season game between the teams. That date was originally occupied by the Maryland-Butler game, which was moved to Boca Raton, Fla., on March 25, with the Terps winning 18-9.

Leading Scorers All Around
* It is believed that the 2003 Maryland men's lacrosse team is in the process of making NCAA sports history as the Terps have a roster unlike any other in the history of college athletics. Maryland has a roster that has four players who led their respective teams in scoring in their last seasons of action. It is still being researched by the NCAA, but it is believed that this is the first instance of its kind in any sport.

* Maryland returns its own leading scorer from 2002 in senior Mike Mollot, who had 46 points on 23 goals and 23 assists last season. The Terps have added three new players who join the team from other Division I programs where each of them led their respective teams in scoring in their last year of action.

* Graduate student Brian Hunt topped Yale's scoring chart in 2001 and finished fourth in the nation in points with 58 on 28 goals and 30 assists.

* Joe Parker, who is also a graduate student, played one year of lacrosse at Colgate last season, where he also led the team in points with 48 on 29 goals and 19 assists.

* Finally, junior transfer Justin Smith, who comes to the Terps from UMBC, was the Retrievers' leading scorer last season with 24 points on 18 goals and six assists.

Terps' 78th Season of Lacrosse
* The Terps, now in the fourth season of the new century, have an all-time record of 628-201-4, dating back to the first varsity team in 1924 (a team was not fielded in 1944 and 1945 due to World War II). Maryland has finished every one of its previous 77 seasons with a .500 or better record, including last season when the Terps went 9-4. The program's 600th win came against Duke on April 21, 2000, 7-6 in the ACC Semifinals at Byrd Stadium.

* In the decade of the 1990s, Maryland recorded its most wins in any decade with a 95-47 record. The .669 winning percentage matched Maryland's win percentage of the 1980s when the Terps went 83-41 and also compiled a .669 win percentage. This decade, the Terps are now 39-13 (.750).
