Maryland Aims To Get Back On Track Vs. UMBC On Senior Night


* The No. 5 Maryland men's lacrosse will look to get back in the win column this Friday night as they host the No. 13 UMBC Retrievers at Byrd Stadium on Senior Night. The game will be televised live on WMAR-TV (Channel 2 in Baltimore) and by the new all-college sports network CSTV (Channel 610 on DirecTV). The broadcast team of Scott Garceau, Keith Mills, Quint Kessenich and former Terp coach Dick Edell will call the action for WMAR, which will be simulcasted on CSTV. The game will also be broadcast on WMUC (88.1 FM) and be accessible over the Internet at www.WMUCRadio.com.

* The Terps come into the game after back-to-back one-goal losses to Johns Hopkins (6-5 in overtime) on April 12 and to Duke (7-6) in the ACC Tournament semifinals last Friday night in Charlottesville, Va. The UMBC game begins a crucial three-game stretch for the Terps as they also host Georgetown on Monday night, April 28, in a re-scheduled game from Feb. 22, which was postponed due to rain and unplayable field conditions. Maryland closes out its regular-season with its first ever trip to Notre Dame on May 3. All three teams left on the Terps' schedule are fighting for NCAA berths in the expanded field of 16 this season.

* Maryland features five players who were honored by the ACC this week. Seniors Michael Howley (Wantagh, N.Y.), Mike Mollot (Holbrook, N.Y.), Ryan Moran (Setauket, N.Y.) and Chris Passavia (Stony Brook, N.Y.) were named to the All-ACC team. It was the third time Howley earned All-ACC accolades making him the first Terp to be honored three years in a row since Mark Douglas (1989-91). Mollot and Passavia were also named to the team last season. It was the first league honor for Moran. Freshman attacker Joe Walters (Rochester, N.Y.) was named the league's Rookie of the Year. He is the first Terp to win the honor since Howley in 2000.

* UMBC comes into the game with a lot of confidence after winning three of its last four games including wins over then-No. 8 North Carolina (10-8) on April 12 and then-No. 9 Towson (10-9) on April 9. Most recently, the Retrievers won at Delaware (13-8) last Saturday night. Their lone loss in their good run came to ECAC league rival Navy (13-10) on April 15. Senior Josh Gerber leads the UMBC attack with 25 goals and eight assists for 33 points. Freshman attacker Brendan Mundorf has 21 goals and a team-high 10 assists for 31 points. Senior goalie Tim Flanagan has had a strong year with a 9.06 goals against average and a 60.7 save percentage. Face-off specialist Pat Muston has taken 241 of the team's 265 draws, winning 131 for a 55.6 win percentage.

The Senior Salute, Class of 2003
* Friday night will be Senior Night as head coach Dave Cottle and his staff will honor the Terps' 12 seniors and two graduate students for their outstanding commitment to the Maryland lacrosse program. The team features four redshirt-seniors in midfielder Matt Brock (Manakin-Sabot, Va.), goalie Danny McCormick (McLean, Va.), midfielder Mike Mollot and attacker Matt Urlock (Lutherville, Md.), all four joined the program in the fall of 1998. Nine seniors will complete their eligibility in four years: midfielder Jamie Daue (Lutherville, Md.), long-stick midfielder Brett Harper (Columbus, Ohio), defenseman Michael Howley, midfielder Sean Leary (Troy, Mich.), defenseman Frank Luciano (Mountain Lakes, N.J.), midfielder Ryan Moran, midfielder Willy Passavia (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and midfielder Jim Sbarra (Great Falls, Va.). This season the dozen seniors were joined by a pair of graduate students who had one year of eligibility left, who chose to play for the Terps, in attacker Brian Hunt (West Chester, Pa.) and midfielder Joe Parker (Crofton, Md.).

* Midfielder Matt Brock has been a part of the Maryland lacrosse program for five years. He has been a key contributor in the midfield playing in 45 games. He has 10 goals and four assists for 14 points along with 24 groundballs. Brock is a two-time member of the ACC and Maryland Honor Rolls.

* Midfielder Jamie Daue has been a clutch contributor during his career with the Terps. He has played in 44 games with 12 goals and 20 total points. He scored game-winning goals against Towson as a sophomore and Stony Brook this season. He has been named to the Maryland and ACC Honor Rolls and was featured on WUSA-TV two years ago.

* Defensive midfielder Brett Harper is one of the premier long-stick defenders in the nation. He consistently battles hard against some of the nation's top offensive players. He has played in 55 games since his freshman year, starting 38 of the last 39. He has 124 career groundballs including 25 this season. He has also scored three goals including one to ice the win at Navy this season.

* Michael Howley has been one of the most decorated defensemen to play at Maryland. A two-time All-American and three-time All-ACC selection, Howley is a candidate for the Tewaaraton Trophy as lacrosse's top player for the second consecutive year. He also won a gold medal as a member of team USA at the 2002 World Games in Australia. He has played in 55 games, starting the last 54 while at Maryland and has 155 career groundballs along with four goals and five assists.

* Attackman Brian Hunt has continued his standout play after an All-American career at Yale. As a graduate student, Hunt has 15 goals and eight assists for 23 points this season. Overall, he has 151 career points, to rank as the second active leading scorer in the ACC. He was a preseason honorable mention All-American this season after being a USILA honorable mention All-American at Yale as well as the 2001 New England Player of the Year.

* Midfielder Sean Leary has been cited by coach Cottle as one of the Terps' most improved players. This four-year letterwinner, has played in 18 games with Maryland, scoring five goals and adding two assists. He is a three-time member of the ACC and Maryland Honor Roll and was the WMAR Scholar-Athlete for this year's game vs. Johns Hopkins.

* Defenseman Frank Luciano has been a man-down specialist as a senior. He has played in 29 games over the last four years scooping 13 groundballs and posting his first career assist against UMBC last season.

* Goalie Danny McCormick has ranked among the nation's top goalies for the past two seasons. He was a USILA honorable mention All-American last season and led the country in goals against average. This season has a 7.23 goals against average to lead the ACC and was a preseason All-American. He has also been on the ACC and Maryland Honor Rolls.

* Midfielder Mike Mollot currently stands 16th on Maryland's all-time point scoring list and 10th all-time in career assists. With 153 career points, he is the ACC's active career scoring leader. He is a two-time member of the All-ACC team and was a second team USILA All-American in 2002. This year he is a candidate for the Tewaaraton Trophy as lacrosse's top player. He has been on the ACC and Maryland Honor Rolls three times and has been nominated as an Academic All-American this year.

* Midfielder Ryan Moran has had his career take off in the last two seasons. He was named an All-ACC selection and named to the ACC All-Tournament Team last week. He has all 30 of his career goals in his last 21 games, scoring 15 in each of the last two seasons. He was a face-off specialist for his first two years before moving to offensive midfield last year and flourished. This season he has returned to face-offs along with running on the first midfield and is second in groundballs with 33.

* Midfielder Joe Parker joined the Terps as a graduate student after a standout football and lacrosse career at Colgate. He has played in eight games this season. At Colgate, he finished as the school's fourth all-time leading receiver and was a I-AA All-American wide receiver. He also led the lacrosse team in scoring in 2002 with 48 points.

* Midfielder Willy Passavia has run with the first midfield this season and has been a key to the Terps' success over the past four years. He has played in 48 games scoring 10 goals and adding eight assists. This season he scored the first goal of the Terps' season and a career high in goals.

* Midfielder Jim Sbarra has played in 23 games in his four years at Maryland. He has taken 51 face-offs over the last three seasons and grabbed 11 groundballs. He scored his only career goal vs. Mount St. Mary's as a sophomore.

* Attackman Matt Urlock has been a man-up specialist with a rifle-shot for the past two seasons after returning from a knee injury suffered in 2001. He has 22 career goals on 64 shots, scoring on more than 33 percent of his shots. He has netted two career hat tricks and tallied four man-up goals.

* Maryland holds a 19-4 lifetime advantage in 23 meetings with state rival UMBC. Maryland has won the last three games, 19-9 last season on May 4; 14-4 in the 2001 home finale at Ludwig Field and three seasons ago, 15-7 in Catonsville on May 6, 2000. Those wins ended a two-year run of detrimental Terp losses to the Retrievers in 1998 and 1999.

* UMBC upset the then-No. 1 Terps in the regular-season finale in 1998, 12-8 at UMBC. They repeated the upset in the 1999 finale, winning 7-6 in College Park in the last game between the teams at Byrd Stadium. Prior to that pair of losses, Maryland had won six meetings in a row from 1992-1997.

* This year marks the first time since 1982, that Maryland-UMBC game will not be played in May. The UMBC game had been the last on Maryland's regular-season schedule for the last 12 years, dating to 1990 with Maryland winning nine of 12 finales.

* Twelve Terps have posted points against UMBC over their careers. Mike Mollot leads the way with 10 points on three goals and four assists. He had a goal and three assists last season after two goals and four assists in the 2000 game in Catonsville.

* Dan LaMonica (Parkton, Md.) posted a then-career high five assists in the 2001 game at Ludwig Field, which he surpassed with six at Navy this season. He also recorded his sixth career hat trick in last year's game at UMBC.

* Ryan Moran posted his third career hat trick in last year's game at UMBC.

* Matt Urlock, Andrew Schwartzman (Owings Mills, Md.), Brett Harper and Matt Brock all scored in last year's 19-9 win as well. Frank Luciano had his first career point on an assist in last year's game.

* In the 2001 game, Jamie Daue, Paul Gillette (Millersville, Md.) and Michael Howley also scored.

* Goalie Danny McCormick has played 67:23 against UMBC over the last three seasons and allowed just nine goals while making 16 saves for a 8.00 GAA vs. UMBC and a 64.0 save percentage.

* Head coach Dave Cottle has recorded a 13-2 record against UMBC, 12-2 while he served as the head coach at Loyola. Prior to last season's 19-9 win while at Maryland, Cottle led his Loyola team to a 19-8 victory in 1996. Cottle has won every game he has coached against UMBC since 1988 including the last two against current UMBC coach Don Zimmerman in 1995 and 1996.

Smith, Gorski Face Old Team
* Maryland junior midfielder Justin Smith (University Park, Md.) will face his former team this weekend as he transferred to Maryland from UMBC after last spring. He led the Retrievers in scoring last season with 24 points on 18 goals and six assists. Smith played in 23 games with UMBC, scoring 26 goals and adding nine assists for 35 points. Smith's brother Jason is the fifth all-time leading scorer in UMBC history with 178 points, which he accomplished from 1991-94 as an attacker.

* Maryland volunteer assistant coach Steve Gorski, who works primarily with the goalies, lettered at UMBC from 1993-96 playing goalie and defense. He made 35 appearances with the Retrievers, starting 14 games in goal and stands 10th all-time in career saves with 224.

Terps Top ACC Stat Charts
* When looking at the ACC statistics, the Terps rank No. 1 in six of nine team and individual categories.

* In the team stats, the Terps have the top defense, allowing just 7.30 goals game and the No. 2 scoring offense at 10.70 goals game.

* On the individual side Joe Walters tops the conference in goals per game (2.5 gpg) and is second in points per game (3.1 ppg) behind Duke's Matt Rewkowski.

* In the assists column, Dan LaMonica and Mike Mollot are 1-2 with LaMonica at 1.6 assists per game and Mollot with 1.4 per contest. LaMonica's 1.6 per game are tied for 16th nationally.

* In face-offs, the Terps are led by junior Jeremy Pastula (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.),. who had a sensational 9/12 outing against Navy. He leads the league in win percentage at 61.5 (32/52).

* Goalie Danny McCormick leads in save percentage (60.8) and goals against average (7.23).

Mollot, Hunt: The ACC's Best
* Mike Mollot and Brian Hunt rank No. 1 and No. 2, respectively among all active ACC players in career scoring. Mollot tops the charts with 153 points on 64 goals and 89 assists. Hunt has the most goals of any ACC player with 93 along with 58 assists for 151 points. Hunt did accumulate 128 of the points at Yale.

* Just a junior, Dan LaMonica is fifth on the list and is the only non-senior with more than 100 career points in the ACC. He has 115 points on 49 goals and 66 assists.

On The Offensive, Terps Scoring At High Rate
* No. 5 Maryland has continued its winning ways with a high-scoring offense that is tallying 10.70 goals per game to rank No. 10 in the nation in goals per game. The Terps have posted at least 12 goals in five of their seven victories this season with a high of 18 vs. Butler in Florida on March 25.

* Joe Walters and Brian Hunt lead the scoring parade. The ACC Rookie of the Year, Walters tops the club with 25 goals and 31 points through nine games. The left-handed attacker posted his fourth four-goal game of the year at Navy and his third four-point game in a row coming on the heels of the Butler game. He also posted four-goal efforts vs. Bucknell and Towson. He was named the WMAR-TV Star of the Game and Maryland Student-Athlete of the Week after the Towson game. He has at least one goal in each of the last nine games.

* A Tewaaraton Trophy "Player to Watch," Hunt came to Maryland after graduating from Yale last spring, has 15 career hat tricks dating back to his career with the Bulldogs after posting three this season, most recently vs. Butler on March 25. His 40-game point scoring streak came to an end at Virginia as he was held off scoring sheet for the first time since his sixth college game in 1999. He began a new streak with a goal and assist at Navy and has 151 career points (3.1 PPG). Hunt's 151 career points are second to only Mike Mollot in career points among players in the ACC.

* All-ACC midfielder and Tewaaraton Trophy candidate Mike Mollot moved into a tie for 10th place on Maryland's all-time career assist chart with an assist vs. Butler and now has 89 for his career. He also stands in a three-way tie for 16th on the Terps' all-time career scoring chart with 153 points after a goal at Navy. Along with Mollot, Scott Hochstadt (1996-99) and John Lamon (1976-79) also have 153 career points. He has 64 goals and 89 assists in three-plus seasons. His 153 points are the most among all active players in the ACC. His 22-game point scoring streak come to an end vs. Johns Hopkins on April 12.

* All-ACC midfielder Ryan Moran has 15 goals to rank tied for second on the team in goals after posting his fifth career hat trick vs. Duke in the ACC Semifinals. Moran, set a new career-high with four goals vs. Bucknell this season on March 11. He now has all 30 of his goals in his last 21 games, dating back to last season -- after never scoring his first two years with Maryland. He has equaled his goal, assist and point totals from last season with 15 goals, four assists and 19 points.

* Junior Dan LaMonica has nine goals and 16 assists for 25 points ranking second in scoring. He became the 31st Terp to pass the 100-point plateau with two goals and three assists vs. Butler on March 25. He now has 115 career points on 49 goals and 66 assists in two-plus years of action. His six assists against Navy were a personal career high and the most by a Terp since Tim Cox also had six against Navy on April 14, 1990. He had a goal and two assists for the second game in row vs. Duke in the ACC Semifinals and now has 10 assists in his last three games.

* The Terps' extra-man unit was strong early in this season and is currently scoring on 34.8 percent of its opportunities. Maryland has scored 16 goals on 46 chances led by Ryan Moran, who has four EMG's. Joe Walters has three and Brian Hunt, Dan LaMonica and Mike Mollot each have two extra-man tallies as well. In comparison, last season the Terps scored just 17 extra-man goals the entire season, on 63 chances (27 percent). The defense has held opponents to just 14 EMG's on 50 chances (28.0 percent).

Defense Holds Opponents Down
* The Terps' defense, the nation's best last year allowing seven goals a game, and has continued its prowess, allowing 7.28 goals per game, backstopped by preseason honorable mention goalie Danny McCormick. Preseason first-team All-Americans Michael Howley and Chris Passavia have teamed with Lee Zink and defensive middies Brett Harper and Paul Gillette to keep opponents at bay. Gillette leads the team in groundballs with 42, while Harper and Passavia top the team in caused turnovers with 17.
