Terps Close Out Home Schedule with first-ever visit from G'Town
* The No. 5 Maryland men's lacrosse team will close out the home portion of the 2003 schedule with the first-ever visit from the Georgetown Hoyas tonight at 7 p.m. The game was originally slated to be played as the season opener for both teams on Feb. 22, but was postponed due to unplayable field conditions at Maryland's Artificial Turf Facility due to a driving rain storm. The game marks the first-ever regular season match-up between the schools located less than 15 miles apart. The teams have scrimmaged each other for many years over the last decade before agreeing to start a regular-season series this season. The teams have met just once in history, the 1997 NCAA Tournament, as the Terps downed the Hoyas, 14-10 at Towson.
* Tonight's game will be broadcast live on WMUCSports.com and available in the College Park area on 88.1 FM.
* Maryland enters the game with an 8-3 record after a solid 15-8 victory over No. 13 UMBC last Friday night at Byrd Stadium. On Senior Night, the Terps' seniors combined for seven goals led by All-ACC selection Mike Mollot (Holbrook, N.Y.), who pumped in three goals and added an assist for four points. Mollot now stands in a tie with Mark Douglas (1988-91) for 14th in Maryland career scoring with 157 points. All-ACC selection Ryan Moran (Setauket, N.Y.) had two goals and two assists to equal his career high with four points in the win. Junior midfielder Justin Smith (University Park, Md.) came back to haunt his former team as he also had two goals (including the game-winner) and two assists for a four-point game vs. the team which he led in scoring last season. ACC Rookie of the Year Joe Walters (Rochester, N.Y.) tallied his sixth hat trick of his initial college campaign and raised his team high goal total to 28. He is closing in on the school record for goals by a freshman set by Matt Hahn, who scored 36 in 1995. Seniors Sean Leary (Troy, Mich.) and Andrew Schwartzman (Owings Mills, Md.) also scored in the win.

* The Terps are vying for their 26th NCAA Tournament berth this season and have important wins over Duke (13-7 on March 2), Towson (12-8 on March 8) and Virginia (8-7 on March 30). The field of 16 will be unveiled on Sunday, May 4 at 8 p.m. live on ESPNEWS (DirecTV Channel 207/Dish Network Channel 142). The Terps close out their 2003 regular-season with their first-ever trip to Notre Dame next Saturday, May 3. The game will face-off at 2 p.m. ET (1 p.m. local time in Indiana).
* Maryland features five players who were honored by the ACC last week. Seniors Michael Howley, Mike Mollot, Ryan Moran and Chris Passavia (Stony Brook, N.Y.) were named to the All-ACC team. It was the third time Howley earned All-ACC accolades making him the first Terp to be honored three years in a row since Mark Douglas (1989-91). Mollot and Passavia were also named to the team last season. It was the first league honor for Moran. Freshman attacker Joe Walters was named the league's Rookie of the Year. He is the first Terp to win the honor since Howley in 2000.
* Georgetown comes into Monday's contest with a 10-1 record after a pair of wins last week, 12-5 over Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday and 8-4 over ECAC rival Rutgers on Saturday. The Hoyas' lone loss came at the hands of Massachusetts, 11-8, on April 19 in Amherst, Mass. Georgetown (4-1 in the ECAC) is currently in first place in the ECAC, a half-game ahead of UMass (3-1), but the Minutemen still have to play Rutgers this weekend. Should UMass beat the Scarlet Knights, they would claim the ECAC's automatic NCAA Tournament berth by virtue of their win over the Hoyas on April 19. If Rutgers wins, the Hoyas would be assured of their seventh consecutive NCAA bid a streak with began in 1997 with that 14-10 loss to Maryland.
* The Hoyas are led by Mike Hammer, who has a team-high 31 points on 13 goals and 18 assists. The Hoyas have a well-balanced offense as six players have 10 goals or more led by Neal Goldman and Walid Hajj, who each have 17. Face-off specialist Andy Corno has won 62.8 percent of his draws this season, but was just 6-of-16 vs. Rutgers last Saturday. In goal, Rich D'Andrea has started 10 games and has a 6.55 GAA and a 57.2 save percentage.
The Senior Salute, Class of 2003
* Tonight's game will be the final regular-season home game for the Terps' 12 seniors and two graduate students. The senior class was honored last Friday night prior to the UMBC game. The team features four redshirt-seniors in midfielder Matt Brock (Manakin-Sabot, Va.), goalie Danny McCormick (McLean, Va.), midfielder Mike Mollot and attacker Matt Urlock (Lutherville, Md.), all four joined the program in the fall of 1998. Nine seniors will complete their eligibility in four years: midfielder Jamie Daue (Lutherville, Md.), long-stick midfielder Brett Harper (Columbus, Ohio), defenseman Michael Howley, midfielder Sean Leary, defenseman Frank Luciano (Mountain Lakes, N.J.), midfielder Ryan Moran, midfielder Willy Passavia (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and midfielder Jim Sbarra (Great Falls, Va.). This season the dozen seniors were joined by a pair of graduate students who had one year of eligibility left, who chose to play for the Terps, in attacker Brian Hunt (West Chester, Pa.) and midfielder Joe Parker (Crofton, Md.).
The Last and Only Meeting Between Maryland & Georgetown
* Maryland defeated Georgetown, 14-10, in the only previous meeting between the schools in men's lacrosse in the first round of the 1997 NCAA Tournament at Towson. The Terps jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first quarter and never looked back as they began their run to the second of three trips to the NCAA championship game in a four-year span. The game marked Georgetown's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
* All-American Scott Hochstadt, the school's 17th all-time leading scorer, led the way for Maryland as he posted five goals. Andrew Whipple added three for Maryland as the Terps outshot the Hoyas, 42-25.
* Georgetown was led by Kevin Hubschmann, who had three goals. Goalie Brian Hole had a sensational game, making 22 saves.
Individual Terps Vs. Georgetown
* As the Terps and Hoyas have not played since 1997, only one current Terp has played Georgetown. Junior Justin Smith faced the Hoyas twice while he was with UMBC in 2001 and 2002. He scored two goals and added an assist in his first game vs. the Hoyas on March 17, 2001 and also recorded a goal and assist in the game last season on March 16.
Mollot, Hunt: The ACC's Best
* Mike Mollot and Brian Hunt rank No. 1 and No. 2, respectively among all active ACC players in career scoring. Mollot tops the charts with 157 points on 67goals and 90 assists. Hunt has the most goals of any ACC player with 93 along with 59 assists for 152 points. Hunt did accumulate 128 of the points at Yale.
* Just a junior, Dan LaMonica is fifth on the list and is the only non-senior with more than 100 career points in the ACC. He has 116 points on 50 goals and 66 assists.
Terps Top ACC Stat Charts
* When looking at the ACC statistics, the Terps rank No. 1 in six of nine team and individual categories. (These stats are prior to the UMBC game)
* In the team stats, the Terps have the top defense, allowing just 7.30 goals game and the No. 2 scoring offense at 10.70 goals game.

On The Offensive, Terps Scoring At High Rate
* No. 5 Maryland has continued its winning ways with a high-scoring offense that is tallying 11.1 goals per game to rank No. 10 in the nation in goals per game. The Terps have posted at least 12 goals in six of their eight victories this season with a high of 18 vs. Butler in Florida on March 25. They broke a mini scoring slump with 15 against UMBC on April 25 -- that came on the heel of consecutive games vs. Hopkins and Duke, when they combined for just 11 goals.
* Joe Walters leads the scoring parade. The ACC Rookie of the Year, Walters tops the club with 28 goals and 35 points through 11 games. With 28 goals, he is closing in on the Maryland school record for goals by a freshman set by Matt Hahn (36) in 1995.The left-handed attacker posted his sixth hat trick of the year vs. UMBC. He has posted four-goal efforts vs. Bucknell, Towson, Navy and Butler. He was named the WMAR-TV Star of the Game and Maryland Student-Athlete of the Week after the Towson game. He has at least one goal in each of the last nine games.
* A Tewaaraton Trophy "Player to Watch," Brian Hunt came to Maryland after graduating from Yale last spring, has 15 career hat tricks dating back to his career with the Bulldogs after posting three this season, most recently vs. Butler on March 25. His 40-game point scoring streak came to an end at Virginia as he was held off scoring sheet for the first time since his sixth college game in 1999. He had an assist vs. UMBC and now has 152 career points (3.1 PPG). Hunt's 152 career points are second to only Mike Mollot in career points among players in the ACC.
* All-ACC midfielder and Tewaaraton Trophy candidate Mike Mollot moved into 10th place on Maryland's all-time career assist chart with an assist vs. UMBC and now has 90 for his career. He also stands tied for 14th on the Terps' all-time career scoring chart with 157 points after three goals and an assist vs. UMBC. Along with Mollot, Mark Douglas (1988-91) has 157 career points. He has 67 goals and 90 assists in three-plus seasons. His 157 points are the most among all active players in the ACC. His 22-game point scoring streak come to an end vs. Johns Hopkins on April 12.
* All-ACC midfielder Ryan Moran has 17 goals to rank tied for second on the team in goals after posting his fifth career hat trick vs. Duke in the ACC Semifinals along with two goals and two assists vs. UMBC. Moran, set a new career-high with four goals vs. Bucknell this season on March 11. He now has all 32 of his goals in his last 22 games, dating back to last season -- after never scoring his first two years with Maryland. He surpassed his season goal, assist and point totals from last season against UMBC as he had 15 goals, four assists and 19 points last season.
* Junior Dan LaMonica has 10 goals and 16 assists for 26 points ranking second in point scoring. He became the 31st Terp to pass the 100-point plateau with two goals and three assists vs. Butler on March 25. He now has 116 career points on 50 goals and 66 assists in two-plus years of action. His six assists against Navy were a personal career high and the most by a Terp since Tim Cox also had six against Navy on April 14, 1990. He had a goal and two assists for the second game in row vs. Duke in the ACC Semifinals and now has 10 assists in his last four games.
* The Terps' extra-man unit was strong early in this season and is currently scoring on 34.0 percent of its opportunities. Maryland has scored 16 goals on 46 chances led by Ryan Moran, who has four EMG's. Joe Walters has three and Brian Hunt, Dan LaMonica and Mike Mollot each have two extra-man tallies as well. In comparison, last season the Terps scored just 17 extra-man goals the entire season, on 63 chances (27 percent). The defense has held opponents to just 14 EMG's on 53 chances (26.4 percent).
Defense holds Opponents Down
* The Terps' defense, the nation's best last year allowing seven goals a game, and has continued its prowess, allowing 7.35 goals per game, backstopped by preseason honorable mention goalie Danny McCormick. Preseason first-team All-Americans Michael Howley and Chris Passavia have teamed with Lee Zink and defensive middies Brett Harper and Paul Gillette to keep opponents at bay. Gillette leads the team in groundballs with 47, while Harper and Passavia top the team in caused turnovers with 19 and 18, respectively.
* Overall, the Terps have outscored their opponents 122-81 (11.1-7.3) per game -- a 3.8 goal margin. Even more amazing is that opponents have just 10 goals total in the second quarter and 17 in the third quarter for a combined total of 27 for the second and third quarters. In contrast the Terps have 60 goals in the middle periods (a 33 goal margin -- 23 in the second quarter alone).
* The Terps' defense has continued to be stellar as it has had several runs of holding its opponents scoreless. In eight of 11 games, the Terps have held opponents scoreless for stretches of at least 20 minutes including the last three games.
* Against UMBC, the Terps shutout the Retrievers in the second quarter -- marking the fifth time a foe has failed to score in the second stanza to date -- and held UMBC off the board for 20:36 from the last first quarter until the early fourth quarter.
* Despite the loss, Maryland held No. 1 Johns Hopkins to just six goals as the Jays came into the game as the nation's fourth highest scoring team at 13.14 per game. Maryland kept Hopkins off the scoreboard for a string of 27:21 from early in the third quarter until the game-winning goal 1:21 into overtime.
* Against Navy, the Maryland defense was on top of its game against as it allowed just one goal over a span of 33:42 from the second through late fourth quarter.
* Against Virginia, the Terps shutdown what was the fifth-highest scoring offense in the country and held the Cavaliers to just seven goals. Maryland limited the Virginia attack to four goals on 17 shots with Howley, Passavia and Zink pressuring the attackers. Maryland blanked Virginia for a spell of 33:06 from the mid-first quarter until 4:14 left in the third quarter. Over that time, the Terps reeled off seven consecutive goals to build a 7-2 lead.
* The Terps kept Butler scoreless for a stretch of 24:32 from late in the second quarter until early in the fourth quarter.
* Maryland kept host Stony Brook to just one goal in the first 33:11 of the game in building a 15-1 lead in the early third quarter. With the score tied 1-1, Maryland went on a 14-goal run holding Stony Brook scoreless for 27:32.
* After a high-scoring 6-6 first quarter with Bucknell, Maryland buckled down and held the Bison off the scoreboard for more than 30 minutes and nearly shut them out for the second and third quarters before a fluke Bison goal with one second left in the third quarter.
* Against Towson, Maryland held the Tigers without a goal for almost 18 minutes from the second to the third quarter and with just one goal from the late second to late fourth quarters.
* Against Duke, the Terps held the then-No. 7 Blue Devils without a goal for 38 minutes spanning the final three quarters and to just one goal for nearly 50 minutes from midway in the first quarter until late in the fourth quarter.

Maryland has finished every one of its previous 77 seasons with a .500 or better record, including last season when the Terps went 9-4. The program's 600th win came against Duke on April 21, 2000, 7-6 in the ACC Semifinals at Byrd Stadium.

Newcomer attackman Brian Hunt, who comes to Maryland as a graduate student after playing at Yale, was also named a preseason honorable mention All-American as he makes his debut as a Terp this spring. Hunt missed all of last year with a broken ankle.
Leading Scorers All Around
* It is believed that the 2003 Maryland men's lacrosse team is in the process of making NCAA sports history as the Terps have a roster unlike any other in the history of college athletics. Maryland has a roster that has four players who led their respective teams in scoring in their last seasons of action. It is still being researched by the NCAA, but it is believed that this is the first instance of its kind in any sport.
* Maryland returns its own leading scorer from 2002 in senior Mike Mollot, who had 46 points on 23 goals and 23 assists last season. The Terps have added three new players who join the team from other Division I programs where each of them led their respective teams in scoring in their last year of action.
* Graduate student Brian Hunt topped Yale's scoring chart in 2001 and finished fourth in the nation in points with 58 on 28 goals and 30 assists.
* Joe Parker, who is also a graduate student, played one year of lacrosse at Colgate last season, where he also led the team in points with 48 on 29 goals and 19 assists.
* Finally, junior transfer Justin Smith, who comes to the Terps from UMBC, was the Retrievers' leading scorer last season with 24 points on 18 goals and six assists.
