Final Stats

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After more than a three-month delay, No. 4 Maryland's first-ever regular season matchup with regional rival and fifth-ranked Georgetown lived up to its physical expectations in front of 2,671 at a warm Byrd Stadium Monday evening.

Veterans Brian Hunt (West Chester, Pa.), Ryan Moran (Setauket, N.Y.) and Mike Mollot (Holbrook, N.Y.) each netted two goals and Lee Zink's (Rowayton, Conn.) first-career goal and strong defense propelled the Terrapins to a 9-5 victory in their regular season home finale.

The teams combined for a whopping 66 turnovers and 18 penalties as the Terps (9-3) pulled away from the feisty Hoyas in the fourth quarter, inching the Terps closer to securing their 26th NCAA Tournament berth and a possible first-round home game.

Walters' man-up goal, off a Hoya turnover, gave Maryland a quick lead 1:10 into the game. Hunt's sixteenth goal of the season, in which he deked Georgetown goalie Rich D'Andrea, gave Maryland a 2-1 edge after one quarter and Moran beat two defenders for his first of two goals in the game early in the second stanza for a two-goal Terrapin lead.

The teams traded scores for a 4-2 Maryland lead at the break and continued the aggressive play into the second half. After Georgetown (10-2) closed the deficit to one at 5-4 midway through the third quarter on Phil Vincenti's second goal of the game, the Terrapins ripped off three straight scores, capped by Zink on a nice feed from Hunt, to put the game away.

Maryland goalie Danny McCormick (McLean, Va.) again had a long scoreless streak, holding the Hoyas off the board for 18 minutes spanning the third and fourth quarters. The senior finished with 14 saves.

The Terps close defense, featuring Zink and all-ACC selections Michael Howley (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Chris Passavia (Stony Brook, N.Y.) combined for 12 groundballs and nine forced turnovers. Zink forced five of those Hoya turnovers. Off the bench, reserve defenseman Frank Luciano (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) picked up three groundballs and two caused turnovers.

Georgetown's Andy Corno had a sensational day on faceoffs, winning 16 of 18 draws. The Hoyas played without senior captain Kyle Sweeney who was diagnosed with a broken left ankle earlier in the day.

The Terps close the regular season Saturday when they travel to South Bend, Ind. to take on the Fighting Irish at 2:00 p.m. ET, while Georgetown concludes the season at home against Syracuse. The NCAA Tournament Tournament Selection Show will be held Sunday, May 4 at 8 p.m. and televised live on ESPNEWS.
