Mollot Stars In STX/USILA Division I North/South All-Star Classic

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Bobby Benson of Johns Hopkins scored four times, while Mike Mollot of Maryland had two goals and two assists as Division I South All-Stars survived a spirited comeback attempt by the Division I North All-Stars to and came away with a 20-15 victory in the 62nd Annual STX/USILA North-South Classic at Sacred Heart University on Saturday afternoon.

Maryland's first team All-American defenseman Michael Howley also started and played for the winning South All-Stars. He grabbed three groundballs.

1,451 fans braved a driving rainstorm and watched the South explode in the first half and build a 13-3 advantages by the intermission. Benson got things rolling for the South with a goal four minutes into game with an assist from Mollot. Jeff Duca of Rutgers tied the game :15 later, but Benson answered just over a minute later for the South to give them the 2-1 advantage midway through the first quarter.

The South reeled off the next four goals to take a 6-1 lead, two of the scores were back-to-back by Chris Summers of Loyola . Devan Spilker of Limestone and Luke Ogelsby of Penn State also scored during that span. Duca scored again for the North with 1:05 left in the first, but Summers quickly answered with his third goal of the game with just :42 left to make it 7-2 South.

The second quarter was more of the same for the South. Mollot scored both of his goals in the quarter, one of them an incredible shot backward between his legs. Kevin Brennan of Duke also scored twice in the quarter for the South. Spilker also collected his second goal of the game in the quarter. The lone North tally was by Jim Femminella of Hofstra 1:30 into the quarter.

What looked like a sure runaway for the South took on a completely different look in the third quarter. Kevin Leveille of Massachusetts scored :54 into the second half. That goal was quickly answered for the South by Benson with his third of the game, on a feed from Mollot.

The North scored the next eight goals of the game, and the curtain rose on the Tim Miyashita Show. Miyashita of Canisius had a pair of goals and three assists in the last 5:29 of the third quarter. Pat Myers of Ohio State started the North run with a goal with 9:19 left in the third. Miyashita then scored with 5:29 left and again with 5:13 to go. He assisted on a goal by Mike Springer of Syracuse with 4:24 to left.

Leveille scored his second of the game, unassisted, with 2:54 to go in the quarter. Miyashita fed a pass to Myers with 2:26 to play for his second goal. Springer scored with 1:33 left in the third and Mike Scaglione of Yale scored on a pass from Miyashita with just :17 to go to close the gap to 14-12 at the end of three.

The end of the third signaled the end of the North uprising, however. The South regained control of the game in the fourth, scoring the first five goals to open it back up to 19-12 and close out the North hopes.

AJ Shannon of the national champion Virginia Cavaliers and Austin Garrison of North Carolina scored unassisted goals in the first three minutes of the quarter. Trevor Walker of Georgetown and Benson followed with unassisted tallies of their own, and Adam Doneger of Johns Hopkins scored on an assist from Chris Rotelli of Virginia to finish out the 5-0 run.

Scaglione and Miyashita scored twice for the North within a minute to cut the gap to 20-14 with 6:51 to play, but Garrison rang the twine unassisted with 6:06 to go to close out the scoring and send the South home victorious.

The South goalies faced a 70-shot barrage by the North squad and made 27 saves. Jeff Nunziato of the University of Denver made 14 saves in the first half, while Justin Sussman of Bucknell made 13 in the second.
