Former Terps Named All-Stars

July 15, 2003

Brian Dougherty (1994-1997) and Brian Reese (1995-1998) have been named starters in the third annual Major League Lacrosse all-star game, an honor bestowed upon each of them for the third consecutive year. The game will be held on July 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Mitchel Athletic Complex on Long Island.

Starting goaltender Brian Dougherty has posted a 5-1 record between the pipes in his first year with the Long Island Lizards. He has stopped 57.5% of shots on goal en route to posting a 13.29 GAA in 307 minutes of action. Reese, a stabilizing force on defense for the Baltimore Bayhawks, has received the starting nod for the National division. The full-time starter is a major reason the Bayhawks have limited opponents to a mere 91 goals. Both players have been integral components in propelling their teams to the top of their respective divisions.

Joining Reese on the Bayhawks are three other Terrapin alums. Casey Connor (1997-2000) has been a steady defensive presence alongside Reese. Together, the tandem has started in 12 of 14 contests this year. On the other side of the field, attacker Andrew "Buggs" Combs (1998-2001) has tallied four goals and midfielder Kip Fulks (1993-1996) has scored one.

Fresh off their stellar senior campaigns at the University of Maryland, rookies Mike Mollot (2000-2003) and Michael Howley (2000-2003) find themselves reunited as teammates with the Rochester Rattlers. Midway through the season, Mollot has netted seven goals and four assists, and Howley continues to display the defensive tenacity that made him an All-American at College Park. Accompanying them is another former Terp standout, Nate Watkins (1999-2002), who is well on his way to proving that his rookie year (11 goals, 12 assists) was no fluke. Currently, Watkins has six goals and is second on the team and tied for tenth in the league with seven assists. His 13 points are good enough for fifth-best on the team.

Midfielder Chris Malone (1998-2001) is playing in his third season with the New Jersey Pride. So far, Malone has registered one goal in limited action.
