College Park, Md. - The University of Maryland women's basketball team opens the 2003-04 schedule with five-straight home games, including a home tournament over Thanksgiving weekend, beginning Nov. 21 which was announced Tuesday. The Terps, who are slated to appear on television at least six times this season, will play in a nationally televised contest on ESPN2 when UM battles national power and Atlantic Coast Conference foe Duke on Feb. 22 in the Comcast Center.
"Opening the season with five-straight home games will be a big advantage heading into the December," said second-year Maryland head coach Brenda Frese. "We are looking forward to the challenge of the ACC schedule and are very excited over the amount of television exposure the program will be receiving through the conference's TV package."
Maryland's five-game homestand to open the 2003-04 campaign begins Nov. 21 when the Terps host Coppin State at 7 p.m. followed by a game against Niagra on Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. The Terrapin Classic features the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Louisiana-Lafayette and Sacred Heart. UMES and the Ragin' Cajuns square off to open the tournament on Nov. 28 at 1 p.m. while UM and the Pioneers tip off at 3:30 p.m. The winners of both games play at 3 p.m. on Nov. 29 with the consolation game slated for 12:30 p.m.
The Terps close out the homestand with a matchup against NCAA Tournament participant Penn State on Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. before hitting the road for the first time for a clash at St. Bonaventure on Dec. 5. UM then battles two local teams in Loyola on Dec. 10 (7 p.m.) and UMBC on Dec. 20 (1:00 p.m.) at the Comcast Center with Virginia Tech hosting the Terps on Dec. 13.
The Terps play in the Surf-N-Slam Tournament hosted by the University of San Diego after the holidays on Dec. 28 and 30 before opening conference play in early January. Maryland faces Texas Tech in the first round of the Surf-N-Slam on Dec. 28 then play Georgetown/San Diego on December 30 to close out the event.
For the second-straight year, Maryland opens the ACC slate at home hosting NC State on Jan. 2 at 7 p.m. followed by another home matchup with Virginia on Jan. 4 for the first of six televised contests on the ACC's regional sports network. The Terps also host Georgia Tech on Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. and while North Carolina comes to College Park on Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. for another TV matchup. The Tar Heels finished second in the ACC last year and ended the season ranked 15th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. Wake Forest comes to the Comcast Center for a TV game on Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. The Blue Devils, who captured the ACC's championship title and advanced to NCAA Final Four, pay a visit to the Terps for UM's final regular season home contest of the year on Feb. 22.
The Terps will be looking to avenge a first round ACC Tournament loss last year where Clemson edged out the Terps, 63-61, to advance in the tournament. The rematch takes place Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. in College Park.
The road ACC schedule opens on Jan. 9 at Wake Forest. Maryland travels to Tallahassee, Fla., on Jan. 12 for the first of two regular season matchups. The Terps host the Seminoles on Feb. 12 to complete the two-game series. Maryland's two road TV contests are at NC State on Jan. 25 and at Virginia on Feb 5.
The 27th Annual ACC Tournament will be held at the Greensboro Coliseum from March 7-10, with NCAA Tournament action beginning on March 20.
Frese returns seven letterwinners and three starters from last year's 10-18 squad. The Terps ended with a 4-12 conference mark to place eighth in the standings.
The team will play two exhibition games prior to the start of the 2003-04 season. Maryland plays Basketball Travelers on Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. and Team Concept on Nov. 16.
