COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland football team held its annual media day on Monday and nearly 100 members of the media came out to speak with the Terps players and coaches while taking photos and getting video footage for television and radio broadcasts.
Below is the first practice report from 2003:
The Terrapins got the ball rolling on 2003 with their first practice of the preseason after a full day of preseason preparation and meeting with the media. Head coach Ralph Friedgen and Co. worked for nearly two-and-a-half hours, mixing conditioning drills with fundamentals before finishing the day with team drills (and then more conditioning).
For the first time, the freshmen worked in with the veterans on the first day of practice. Due to new NCAA guidelines, freshmen were not afforded the opportunity to get work in before the first day of full-squad practices. A pair of Terp receivers -- Vernon Davis and Drew Weatherly -- were among the more noticeable newcomers on day one as was cornerback Josh Wilson.
New Practice Fields Outstanding
The first day of preseason practice also gave the team its first chance to work on the newly-renovated practice fields with fans and players alike impressed with the new fields.
To give the new grass more time to set in, the Terps did all of their work on the new field turf, a field that looks incredible and feels much better than its predecessor, the UM Turf Facility.
During practice, Coach Friedgen patrolled the field in his golf cart and did his best to belt out instruction from the coaches' tower during team drills, despite a hoarse voice due to an illness he came down with the evening prior to the start of camp.
