COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland head football coach Ralph Friedgen was the central subject of a two-page photographic package run by Sports Illustrated magazine in its 2003 College Football Preview issue, which hit newstands and mailboxes this week.
Friedgen, who is 21-5 in his two years as the head coach at Maryland, was listed as "The X's and O's Wiz" in the package, which listed the top coaching minds in the nation in college football and was entitled "Wise Guides."
The theme of the magazine's preview issue this year is "Brain Power." Articles and features discuss the chess-like nature of the game and the complexity of offensive and defensive schemes.
In its short description, the magazine notes the Terps' "exhaustive offensive playbook that features more than 115 plays with 1,100 variations."
Sports Illustrated picked Maryland 18th in its preseason ranking of teams in the nation.
