Freshman Tops Terps at Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C. - Freshman Katie Stepanek (Guilford, Conn.) had rounds of 75 and 76 in her collegiate debut Monday, finishing the day as Maryland's individual leader at the Cougar Classic women's golf tournament, hosted by the College of Charleston.
Stepanek finished the opening 36 holes with a 7-over total of 151, tying her for 24th place in the field. She had the best rounds of the day by a Terrapin player on the par-72 Yeamans Hall Golf Club course.
As a team, Maryland was in 14th place after the second round, opening at 322 and following with a 316 for a 638 total. The Terrapins are nine shots behind Kentucky in the team standings with 18 holes to play on Tuesday.
Katie Redeker (Pepper Pike, Ohio) was in a tie for 60th place after finishing at 161, while Kristen Shew (Hockessin, Del.) shot a second-round 79 to finish the opening day at 162 and in a tie for 69th. Stacey Wolejko (Hatfield, Mass.) was 74th at 164 after 36 holes, with Jessica Reno (Wilmington, Del.) carding identical rounds of 86 on Monday.
Tina Miller of Miami led the individual standings after the first two rounds, shooting a 70 and 69 for a 5-under 139. Noriko Nakazaki of Notre Dame, at 3-under, and Jade Polonich of Ole Miss, at 1-under, were the only other players to finish 36 holes under par.
Miami and Notre Dame were tied atop the team standings at 589 heading into Tuesday's final round.
