Terps Host 2003 Maryland/Adidas Classic This Week
* Maryland hosts the 2003 Maryland/Adidas Classic this week featuring four NCAA Tournament teams from last season. With the threat of Hurricane Isabel hitting the Mid-Atlantic region on Thursday afternoon to evening, the first two games of the Classic have been adjusted to hopefully prevent the postponment of the games. Action will now open on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at Ludwig Field on Maryland's campus. The first game pits the host Terrapins against Loyola at 7:00 p.m. Then on Thursday morning, No. 23 Tennessee will take on William & Mary at 10 a.m. The Maryland-Loyola game will be broadcast live on WMUCSports.com and 88.1 FM and live stats will be available on umterps.com. For tickets, please call 301-314-7070.
* The tournament concludes on Saturday, Sept. 20, as the action moves to the SoccerPlex in Germantown, Md. Loyola faces William & Mary at 5 p.m. and the Terps play Tennessee at 7:30 p.m. Live stats will be available for Saturday's game as well on umterps.com. Admission will be free for both games. Tournament Schedule:
Wednesday, Sept. 17 (at Ludwig Field, College Park, Md.): Loyola at Maryland, 7:00 p.m.
Thursday, Sept. 18 (at Ludwig Field, College Park, Md.): Tennessee vs. William & Mary, 10 a.m.
Saturday, Sept. 20 (at SoccerPlex, Germantown, Md.): Loyola vs. William & Mary, 5 p.m.; Tennessee vs. Maryland, 7:30 p.m.
World Cup Weekend
* Many of the players in this weekend's tournament will be taking in the Opening Ceremony of the 2003 Women's World Cup at RFK Stadium this Sunday. In fact, the 2003 Maryland/adidas Classic was originally scheduled to finish on Sunday, but it was moved back a day, to Saturday, to accommodate the teams and soccer fans, allowing them to come to the Classic on Saturday and the World Cup festivities and the United States' opening game with Sweden on Sunday.
* With the games being moved to Saturday, it presented a conflict on the Maryland campus with the Terps-West Virginia football game at 6 p.m., thus the second day of action was moved to the SoccerPlex in Germantown.
A Look Back at The Terps' Weekend Vs. Familiar Faces
* The Terps wrapped up a pair of weekend games with a 3-2 win over Towson and a 2-2 tie at George Washington. Maryland now stands at 3-2-1 overall.
* On a wet and rainy Friday night, sophomore midfielder Kimmy Francis (Richboro, Pa.) netted a pair of goals and added an assist for a career-high five points as the Terps posted a 3-2 win over Towson, coached by former Terp Leslie Kehrin Wray. Sophomore forward Ali Andrzejewski (Lutherville, Md.) opened the scoring with her first goal of the season off a pass from Francis, just 2:39 into the match. The Tigers tied the game at 1-1, before Francis scored on her second penalty kick of the season to make it 2-1 before halftime. Francis scored her second of the game in the 63rd minute off a pass from Jen Biscoe (Baltimore, Md.) to make it 3-1. Towson's Emma Noonan scored her second goal of the game for the final tally of the game. Freshman goalkeeper Anna Sheveland (Farmers Branch, Texas) earned her first career win in her collegiate debut, playing the second half and making one save.
* On Sunday, the Terps and head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski headed to our nation's capital and played the coach's former school to a 2-2 tie in Mount Vernon. Senior midfielder Audra Poulin (Silver Spring, Md.) got the Terps on the board as she headed home a Kimmy Francis corner kick in the 16th minute. That assist gave Francis six points in the two games over the weekend. The Terps made it 2-0 on an own goal as a Colonial defender shot the ball into her own net early in the second half. George Washington scored two goals in the final 15:39 of regulation to send the game to overtime where it ended in a tie. The Terps had two great chances off the feet of Katie Ludwig (Mount Laurel, N.J.) and Simone Dekker (Ringwood, N.J.) with eight minutes left in the second overtime, but GW's keeper Anna Handzlik was up to the task and finished with 13 saves. Maryland is 8-0-2 in its last 10 games vs. George Washington.
About This Weekend's Field
* Loyola comes into the Classic with a 1-4 record. The Greyhounds have dropped their last two matches, falling to American last Saturday, 3-1 in Washington, D.C., and losing to LSU at the Tigers' tournament in Baton Rogue, 2-0 on Sept. 7. The Hounds lone win came in a 5-0 whitewash of McNeese State at the LSU Tournament on Sept. 5. They also dropped a pair of games in Boca Raton, Fla., to open the year, falling to host Florida Atlantic, 2-1 and Miami, 2-0. Freshman Carolyn Kennington leads the team in scoring with three goals for six points. Junior Ellen Sroka has two goals and assists for five points. In goal, junior Erica Niemann started the first four games of the season and posted a 1.51 GAA before sophomore Kate Gilfillan started vs. American and allowed three goals. Last season, Loyola went 12-6-2, reaching the NCAA Tournament first round.
* Tennessee is ranked in all four major polls this week and comes in with a 5-1 record. The Lady Vols come to College Park fresh off a First Tennessee Classic championship, claimed last weekend in Knoxville. Tennessee knocked off Charlotte, 3-0 to win the final on Sunday. They also blanked Richmond, 2-0 on the first day of action. The Lady Vols opened the year with a pair of wins at home, beating UC Santa Barbara (1-0) and Fresno State (3-1). They suffered their only loss at Brigham Young (1-0) on Sept. 5. They rebounded with a 5-2 win at UNLV before returning home last weekend. A well-balanced scoring attack is led by junior Lyndsey Patterson, who has eight points on three goals and two assists. Eight different Lady Vols have scored goal this season as UT is outscoring its opponents, 14-4. Sophomore Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart has played all 540 minutes in goal and has a 0.67 GAA and 78.9 save percentage. The Lady Vols had their best season in program history last year as they went 18-6-1 and advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen after winning the SEC East Championship. The Lady Vols are coached by Angela Kelly, who played at North Carolina from 1991-94, just after Terp coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski finished her career in 1989 with the Tar Heels.
* William & Mary is 3-2-1 overall this season and is undefeated in its last three matches after losing to Maryland, 2-1 on Sept. 5. The Tribe defeated Tulsa, 3-1 and tied host Arkansas at the Fayetteville Athletic Club Classic last weekend. They rebounded from the loss to the Terps with a 4-0 blanking of Liberty of Sept. 7. They opened the year with a 1-0 win over Georgetown and 2-1 loss to then-No. 11 Virginia. Freshman Katie Hogwood leads the Tribe in scoring with five goals for 10 points. She was named the CAA Rookie of the Week last week. Goalkeeper Nikki Villott has started all six games and has a 0.97 GAA. Last season, William & Mary went 13-7-1 and reached the NCAA First Round.

The Series With Loyola
* Maryland continues its rivalry with Loyola this season, for the third year in a row after not playing for six seasons. The Terps have won all seven of the matches between the teams and have outscored the Greyhounds, 24-3 in the series which started in 1987.
* Last season, an injured Ali Andrzejewski (Lutherville, Md.) made a surprise comeback in the second half and scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute to lift No. 25 Maryland to a 2-1 victory over Loyola at Ludwig Field in the first round of the Maryland/FILA Classic on Sept. 13, 2002. The Terps had jumped on top early as Simone Dekker put home a rebound of a Kimmy Francis blast in the 6th minute. The goal came in Dekker's first career start -- in place of the injured Andrzejewski.
* Two years ago, Maryland topped the Greyhounds, 2-0 at Ludwig Field on Sept. 30 as Jen Biscoe scored off a pass from Kim King in the 3rd minute and Courtney Beirne scored off an assist from Melissa Anderson (Annapolis, Md.) in the 87th minute to seal the win. Ali Wolff -- who served as an assistant coach at Loyola last season -- made two saves in the win.
The Series With Tennessee
* Maryland meets Tennessee for the first time in school history this Saturday. The Lady Vols program started in 1996 while Maryland has been playing soccer since 1987.Maryland has never played a team from the state of Tennessee.
* All-time the Terps are 2-2-1 against teams from the Southeastern Conference. They are 1-0 against Georgia and Louisiana State; 0-1-1 against Florida and 0-1 vs. Alabama. The last time the Terps played an SEC team came at the end of the 1998 regular season, as they competed at the LSU Tournament, beating the host Tigers, 7-0 on Oct. 31 and falling to Alabama, 2-1 on Nov. 1.
* One Terp has played against the Lady Vols before -- sophomore Lauren Krasko (Grasonville, Md.), who transferred to Maryland from SEC school Kentucky after last fall. Krasko started two games on defense for the Wildcats vs. the Lady Vols last season including the SEC Tournament.
Maryland's Home Tournament History

Terps Moving Up Assist Chart
* Two Terps have moved up the Maryland career assist chart this season. Lindsay Givens and Jenny Biscoe stand tied for fifth with current Towson coach Leslie Kehrin Wray with 15. Givens moved into a tie with current with her throw-in assist at Washington in the season opener on Aug. 29. Biscoe joined the list with 15 last Friday against Towson as she provided the pass that led to Kimmy Francis' second goal of the game. Francis now has 10 career assists and is on the verge of breaking on to the top 10 in just her second year with the Terps.
* Givens has 10 of her 15 career assists on throw-ins. Biscoe led the squad in assists last season with nine including a school-record tying three at Rutgers on Sept. 6, 2002. Dana Jarzyniecki set the record originally vs. Howard on Oct. 11, 2000.
* Biscoe also stands fourth on the career chart for career game-winning goals with seven entering her senior season. She needs just one to tie Jackie Mynarski (1996-99) for third all-time with eight. Keri Sarver holds the school record with 17.
The 2003 Captains
* Maryland will have a trio of team captains this season: midfielder Jen Biscoe (Baltimore, Md.) and defenders Lindsay Givens (Downingtown, Pa.) and Jennifer Lovecchio (Vineland, N.J.). Givens has served as a captain for the past two seasons while Biscoe is in her second season as a captain and Lovecchio her first. Both Biscoe and Givens were both named to the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic team in 2001.
Playing The Best
* The Terps, who reached the second round of the NCAA Women's College Cup last season, will take on 11 teams that played in the 2002 College Cup. They will also face six teams that finished the 2002 season ranked in the NSCAA Top 25 -- including three from the top ten in No. 3 North Carolina, No. 4 Penn State and No. 10 Tennessee.
* "I strongly believe this 2003 women's soccer team is going to be the best yet in my time here at Maryland," said Shannon Higgins-Cirovski. "We have an incredibly challenging schedule again. I am excited to be playing some of the best teams in the nation, as the only way to be the best is to play the best -- and that's what we are striving to do again."
* Maryland will host two of the four teams that advanced to the NCAA College Cup Semifinals in North Carolina (Oct. 5, at 1 p.m.) and Penn State (3-0 loss on Sept. 7). The Terps will also face challenges from NCAA qualifiers and ACC foes Florida State (Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.), Clemson (Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. - Alumni Night), Virginia (Oct. 14 at 7 p.m.) and Wake Forest (Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.).
* Once again, Higgins-Cirovski has scheduled one of the nation's competitive schedules. The Terps take on seven teams in this week's NSCAA poll including five in the top 15. The Terps face No. 1 North Carolina (Oct. 5), at No. 8 Virginia (Oct. 14), No. 11 Penn State (3-0 loss on Sept. 7), No. 13 Clemson (Oct. 10), No. 14 Washington (2-1 loss on Aug. 29), at No. 17 Duke (Oct. 31) and No. 23 Tennessee (This Saturday).
* During each of Higgins-Cirovski's seasons at Maryland, she has led the Terps to at least one upset win or tie of a top-10 ranked team, leading Maryland to a 4-3 win at No. 9 Duke on Sept. 19, 1999 and a 2-1 victory over Clemson on Oct. 17, 1999; a 3-1 win over No. 4 Penn State on Aug. 29, 2000; a 1-0 overtime over No. 8 Clemson on Oct. 13, 2001 and a 1-1 tie at No. 2 North Carolina last season, on Nov. 1, 2002.
