Terrapins Place 14th in Season-Opener

HANAHAN, S.C. - Freshman Katie Stepanek (Guilford, Conn.) shot an 81 and finished in a tie for 33rd place to lead University of Maryland finishers Tuesday at the Cougar Classic women's golf tournament, hosted by the College of Charleston.
Stepanek finished with a 54-hole total of 232 in her first appearance as a collegiate player. Katie Redeker (Pepper Pike, Ohio) had the Terps' best round of the day, firing a final-round 79 to finish at 240 and in a tie for 57th place.
Maryland finished the day with a team score of 323, remaining in 14th place in the team standings in the tournament.
Kristen Shew (Hockessin, Del.) shot an 81 on Tuesday, finishing 68th at 243, while Stacey Wolejko (Hatfield, Mass.) was tied for 74th at 248 after a final-round 84. Jessica Reno (Wilmington, Del.) shot an 82 on Tuesday to finish 81st at 254.
Tina Miller of Miami, the leader after 36 holes in the event, shot a 75 on the final day but held on to win the individual title with a 2-under total of 214. Noriko Nakazaki of Notre Dame was second at 217 following a 76 in the third round.
Notre Dame won the team title, posting the best round of the day at 300. Furman finished six strokes behind, with Miami falling to third, eight strokes behind the Irish.
Maryland's women's team continues its fall schedule Oct. 11 and 12 at the Nittany Lion Invitational.
