COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Tom Miller announced his resignation Thursday as head coach of the University of Maryland wrestling program to pursue a specific professional opportunity, associate athletics director Michael Lipitz said.
"I am returning to work for a previous employer that has provided me with a lucrative professional opportunity that I cannot pass up," said Miller. "It was a difficult decision, but the right one for me at this time. I will always be a Terp and hope to stay involved with the Maryland wrestling family." Miller worked for six years as a Terps assistant coach before being elevated to head coach last April.
Lipitz said a national search for the new head coach is already under way and is expected to take from four to six weeks. Assistant coach Shane Mack, a former Terrapin wrestler from 1994-1998, has been appointed to serve as interim head coach until the search is complete.
"We wish Tom well in his endeavors," said Lipitz. "We will do whatever we can to ensure a smooth transition and hire a top-quality coach for our wrestling student-athletes."
