Terps Split Dual Wrestling Matches

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Matt Pandullo, Dan Scheets and Jerry Afari each won a pair of matches to spark Maryland to a split of dual wrestling matches with Slippery Rock and host Duquesne in the ACC / East Region Challenge on Saturday at Fox Chapel High School.
The Terps got pins at each of the three heaviest weights to score a come-from-behind 24-22 victory over Slippery Rock. Duquesne had four straight victories in the middle weights to take a 27-16 win over Maryland in the day's other match, as the Terrapins opened their dual-meet schedule.
Pandullo, a senior wrestling at 125 pounds, had a 6-1 decision over Ben Watson of Slippery Rock, then later scored an 8-0 major decision over Brad Cipriani in the Duquesne match. Wrestling at 197, Afari pinned Shawn Adams of Slippery Rock in 5:57, then the Terp freshman came back to beat Duquesne's Chandler Carranza, 10-7. Scheets, a junior, pinned Jeremiah Frederick of Slippery Rock in 6:27 of the 184 bout, and picked up a forfeit against the host Dukes.
Against Slippery Rock, Barry Stein followed the falls by Scheets and Afari, and added a pin at heavyweight for the Terps, winning over Marcus Bartley in 1:29. Jason Grimshaw also won at 141 against Slippery Rock.
Charlie Pinto got the call for Maryland at 141 against Duquesne and earned a decision.

Maryland stays on the road for its next two dual matches, wrestling at Navy on Wednesday and at NC State next Saturday before hosting its first wrestling action of the season on Jan. 23 against North Carolina at 7:30 p.m.
