COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland women's basketball team plays host to ACC rival Clemson on Thursday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. The Terps are looking to snap a three-game losing skid and pick up their fifth conference win of the season. The evening also marks the second of four Family Nights which the Terps will be hosting this year.
With half the conference slate still remaining, head coach Brenda Frese has guided the Terps (12-7, 4-4 ACC) to more wins than last year, equaling their ACC win total from a year ago. Returning to the friendly confines of home after traveling to Duke and NC State, Maryland is 9-2 this season on the Comcast Center hardwood and looks to improve that mark and move up in the ACC standings when the Tigers (15-3, 5-2 ACC) roll into town. Clemson is tied for second in the conference standings, having won its last four ACC contests.
The Terps are led by a couple of freshman, with Shay Doron (Great Neck, N.Y./Christ the King) pacing the attack with 12.7 points per game, with classmate Kalika France (Forestville, Md./Bishop McNamara) following with 11.8 ppg. France is also the team's leading rebounder at 5.7 rpg. Both are among the top four freshmen scorers in the league. Senior Delvona Oliver's play has stepped up since the conference slate began, averaging 12.5 ppg in ACC games, including averaging 14.8 ppg over the last four contests.
While the Terps lead the all-time series versus Clemson, 29-23, Maryland has not defeated the Tigers in the last four tries, including dropping a heartbreaking 63-61 decision in the first round of the ACC Tournament, ending Maryland's season last year.
Maryland's game versus Clemson can be heard on WMUC radio and over the internet at www.umterps.com.
