Postgame Quotes: Maryland Vs. Clemson

Jan. 29, 2004

Recap |  Box Score

Clemson head coach Jim Davis

On Clemson's defensive play:
"Our same Achilles heel is that we won't block out rebounding. [Maryland] got 20 offensive rebounds and that should never happen in two games, let alone one."

On Shay Doron:
"I think she's a great athlete, but she's a very skilled player. To me, that was a quiet 22 [points]. She's just out there playing and scores on the layup, scores on the dribble penetration to the middle of the lane, scores on the three with a step back, scores on offensive rebounds. She's just a very good all-around player. She's obviously got a bright future."

On the Maryland program's improvement:
"We made a statement going into the game tonight that this was not the same Maryland team we faced last year and beat three times. This is a very, very much improved basketball team. Obviously recruiting is the key and Brenda [Frese] has recruited some really, really fine guard play and I know she has some good post-players coming in next year. That's where you have to start."

Maryland head coach Brenda Frese

On Maryland's performance against Clemson:
"I'm very excited about the energy and intensity we brought tonight. It's no surprise when we can come out and defend that way and rebound the ball the way we did. We can be competitive with anyone. Every time they made a run at us, we were able to sustain and push further instead of giving up. It's exciting to watch and see us come together like that."

"Our defense made our offense go tonight. We were so aggressive defensively and were obviously able to be aggressive on the offensive end. We had an inside-outside game and we had a low-post presence. Our guards stepped up and hit big shots, both Alli [Spence] and Shay [Doron]. Everyone was ready. Vicki Brick, when she was called on tonight, did a tremendous job. When you shoot the ball like we did in the second half, 46 percent from the field, we were really feeling it."

Senior center Delvona Oliver

On Maryland's 68-55 victory over Clemson:
"It felt great playing like that. Everybody was playing together and we needed that win."

On Maryland's improved rebounding:
"[Coach Frese] has been emphasizing it. She gave us a stat sheet and when we out-rebound opponents, we win. It's true, look at tonight."
