COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men's soccer team celebrated another great season Thursday evening at its annual team banquet held at the University of Maryland Golf Course. At the banquet, the players received their national semifinal plaques, a highlight video title "A Great Run" and scrapbook from the season.
Individually, several players were honored for their outstanding performances. Seth Stammler and Clarence Goodson, who will continue their careers in the MLS, shared defensive MVP honors for the season. The two centerbacks helped Maryland to 12 shutouts this season and held opponents to just over an average of three shots on goal per game.
Jason Garey and Sumed Ibrahim shared the offensive MVP award. Garey emerged this season as one of the top finishers in the country, scoring 13 goals and adding three assists. Sumed, a Hermann Trophy finalist, finished the season with seven goals and seven assists. He finished his career third at Maryland for career assists (28) and eighth in points (78).
The team MVP honor went to Scott Buete. Buete, a first team All-ACC and All-America selection, is credited for being the team's engine. Buete scored three goals and had three assists in 2003, and finishes his career in fourth for career assists (24) at Maryland.
Bryan Vitagliano was honored for his exemplary work in the classroom and in the University of Maryland community.
The banquet also provided the coaching staff the opportunity to thank the seven seniors who accomplished so much in their time at Maryland. As fifth-year seniors, Scott Buete, Sumed Ibrahim, Siba Mohammed and A.J. Herrera posted a record of 65-23-2 and made four trips to the NCAA Tournament, including two College Cup appearances. The group also captured an ACC Tournament and regular season title.
Four-year seniors Seth Stammler and Bryan Vitagliano helped lead the Terps to a 63-26-2 overall record. The tandem also made three appearances in the NCAA Tournament, won an ACC Tournament and regular season crown, and made back-to-back College Cup appearances.
Transfer Nino Marcantonio had tremendous success in his two seasons with the Terps. In addition to leading the team in assists in 2003 with 10, Marcantonio's record with the team was 40-8-1. He was with the team for both College Cup appearances and its ACC titles.
The banquet concluded with the naming of the captains for the 2004 squad. Leading Maryland next season will be seniors Noah Palmer and Abe Thompson, and redshirt junior Michael Dello-Russo.
