College Park, Md. - Maryland soccer player Sumed Ibrahim, one of three finalists for the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy, will head to St. Louis this Friday where the winner will be announced. The Hermann Trophy is handed annually to college soccer's most outstanding player.
St. John's defender Chris Wingert and Coastal Carolina forward Joseph Ngwenya are the other finalists.
A senior midfielder, Sumed helped lead Maryland to a 20-3-1 record and a trip to the Men's College Cup semifinals. He was the difference-maker in six matches this season, scoring either the game-winning goal or having the game-winning assist. Sumed ranks in the top 10 in career points and assists for the Terrapins. He finished the 2003 campaign with seven goals and seven assists (21 points).
While no player from the University of Maryland has ever won this distinguished award, the Terps have had several top finishers in the voting conducted by college coaches around the country. Leo Cullen finished fourth in 1997, Tod Herskovitz finished ninth in 1995 and Keith Beach was 10th in 1998.
