NEWARK, Del. - The University of Maryland track and field teams opened its seasons with a successful outing at the Delaware Invitational Friday night, compiling seven individual victories.

Danielle Bailey, in her debut as a Terrapin after transferring from Seton Hall in the fall, earned a victory in the 400 meters with a time of 59.48. Other winners on the women's side included Danielle Siebert in the 1,000 meters (3:01.74) and Meghan Braffet in the 3,000 meters (10:13.59). Finishing just behind Braffet in the 3,000 meters was Justine Kovacs with a time of 10:16.17, good for second place.

Another second-place finisher for the Terrapin women was Bria Johnson in the shot put (44-0.50). Also performing well in the field events was Labelle Hillgrove, who finished third in the weight throw (47-9.75) and fourth in the shot put (41-3.75).

Other top-five finishers for the women included Amanda Radziminski (fifth-place, 400 meters, 1:01.65), Laurel Jefferson (fourth-place, mile, 5:20.36), Zakiya Shivers (fifth-place, weight throw, 41-7.75) and Meghan Watts (fifth-place, pole vault, 10-06.00).

On the men's side, the Terrapins had four individual winners, led by freshman Robert Duru with a 60 meters victory (7.00) and Chris Ader in the 500 meters (1:08.18).

Other Terrapin winners were Brian Grubel in the pole vault (14-2.75) and John Collins in the weight throw (58-11.25). Beau Fay finished behind Collins with a throw of 53-1.50 in that event, while Florent Groberg had a second-place finish in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:35.13.

Several other Terrapin men had top-five finishes, including Collins (fifth-place, shot put, 44-10.25), Adam Durham (fourth-place, long jump, 21-0.00), Matt Sanders (fourth-place, 3,000 meters, 8:56.46), Dan Ryan (fourth-place, 1,000 meters, 2:36.74) and Brian Bohlayer (third-place, 400 meters, 52.18).

Maryland returns to the track tomorrow at the Father Diamond Open on the campus of George Mason. That meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
