The Maryland men's lacrosse team and head coach Dave Cottle welcomed back the 2004 seniors that led the Terps to the NCAA quarterfinals last year, on Sunday, October 10, for the annual awards banquet at the UMUC Inn and Conference Center.
Former Coach Dick Edell was on hand to help present the honors, most notably the third annual "Big Man" award that was created to honor the player that best exemplified the selfless and positive qualities of the retired coach. The 2004 award was given to team captain Paul Gillette.
The Daniel Slafkosky Coach's Award was also given out, in memory of the assistant coach Dave Slafkosky's son who passed away prior to the 2001 season. The coaches chose this year's recipient, attacker J.R. Bordley, as the player who best illustrated Dan's positive attitude on and off the field.
Other awards given out in honor of individual accomplishments throughout the 2004 season were:
Van Trump Award for best overall attackman: Joe Walters
Deckman-Silber Award for best overall defenseman: Lee Zink and Chris Passavia
William Cole Award for best overall midfielder: Bill McClone
Dan Snyder Award for Most Improved Player: Drew Virk
Peter Worstell Award for greatest comeback: Peter Ellis
Levitt Memorial Award for the best freshman: Ryan Clarke
Faber Heagy Award for the team's Unsung Hero: Dave Wagner
Edwin Powell, Team MVP for 2004: Paul Gillette
