COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's basketball team held an open practice on Sunday afternoon, showcasing the new 2004-05 team for fans. A three-pointer from sophomore Shay Doron with six seconds to spare, tied the score in was not only a competitive and intense scrimmage, but also fun.
"We are very appreciative of the fan support we received today and throughout the year," said head coach Brenda Frese. "It's great to see their excitement in our team. The team has been working very hard and we are looking forward to this new season."
The Terps have been working hard at practice since the season kicked off with the annual Midnight Madness. Today was a culmination of that hard work and the coaching staff was able to, not only let the team play, but also continue to teach them in a game-like setting.
"We're excited to be able to see the continual progress of each of our players. They improve everyday they step onto the court. We were able to see where we'll be able to exploit opponents' weaknesses. On the other hand, we also saw the different things we need to improve upon."
With seven returning letterwinners, the veterans were able to show how they have improved since the end of last season when Maryland reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Senior Anesia Smith, the most experienced member of the team, took on the role of floor general and showed her improved offensive game. Sophomore Preseason All-ACC pick Shay Doron and classmate Kalika France took on their new roles as leaders while showcasing their abilities to make big plays.
In her new role as a swing player, junior Charmaine Carr showed how much she has been working in the off-season. As did junior Angel Ross and sophomores Aurelie Noirez and C'Vette Henson.
Fans got to know some unfamiliar faces and also saw what the four new freshmen are able to add to the Terps. Laura Harper, ACC Preseason Rookie of the Year Crystal Langhorne and Jade Perry showed their prowess in the post by showcasing their post-up moves as well as pulling down rebounds and finishing off a fast break. Ashleigh Newman showed off her shooting skills and handled some of the point guard duties. Newcomer Liz Gilchrest, a senior transfer from Washington College, also introduced herself to fans making some clutch shots.
The Terrapins, who were voted to finish third in the ACC in a preseason media poll, continued with practice until their exhibition game on Sunday, Nov. 14. Maryland hosts UMMC Ekaterinburg at 6 p.m.
