COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
In Maryland's annual Red-Black intra-squad wrestling match, Red defeated Black 15-9 Saturday afternoon at Comcast Center Pavilion. Red won five of the seven weights wrestled on the day, including a major decision from Jason Kiessling at 165 pounds.
"I thought the guys wrestled a little tentatively today," head coach Pat Santoro said. "It's tough to wrestle your teammate because of the respect that they have for each other. I still think this is good preparation for us when we begin the season in two weeks."
The match began at 157 pounds where Adam James tallied takedowns in the first and second periods en route to a 5-2 win over freshman Ryan Kennett. James scored his first takedown immediately after being warned for stalling and controlled the match after that point. He amassed a 1:26 of riding time in the win.
Kiessling scored a takedown in the first 15 seconds of the match and turned Rob Parker for three back points to take a 5-0 lead in the first period. After starting the second period down, Kiessling was able to quickly score the reversal to go up 7-0. Kiessling continued to dominate the match, racking up nearly six minutes of riding time in the 13-0 major decision.
After a scoreless first period, Lehigh transfer Mike Maceroli scored an escape and then a quick takedown to take a 3-0 lead over Yony Noy in the 174 pound weight class. Noy countered with an escape to start the third and pressured Maceroli into a stalling penalty, but was unable to get a takedown to tie the match.
At 184 pounds, Mark Eberstein got the Black team on the board with a pin of Pat Cissne in just 31 seconds. Eberstein was able to take Cissne to his back after a quick takedown to register the fall.
There were no bouts at 197 or heavyweight, so the match moved to 125 pounds where Jeff Oldham and Kevin Vinh were each called for stalling three times in the first two periods resulting in a 2-2 tie after five minutes. Vinh started the third with a quick escape, and the two wrestled on their feet the rest of the way. Oldham was in on a shot late in the third, but was unable to finish as time expired. The win tied the match between the two squads at 9-9.
The match's most even bout was at 133, where Ryan Brown and Sean Carr needed two tiebreakers to get a decision. After each wrestler was penalized a second time for stalling, the match went to the tiebreaker. Carr was able to remain in control for the first 30 seconds, and forced a locked hands call on Brown in the second tiebreaker session. However, Carr was forced to take his second injury timeout, allowing Brown to select bottom. Brown escaped to even the match at 3-3 as the two wrestled through another one minute sudden death session. Brown was able to maintain control in the final 30 seconds to take the victory for the Red squad.
In the final bout of the day, Charlie Pinto and Andrew Schlaffer wrestled evenly through two and a half periods but Pinto proved to be too much in the third scoring a takedown and three nearfall points to take the 10-6 decision, sealing the win for the Red team. There was no match at 149 pounds.
The Terps open the season at the Body Bar Invitational on November 20-21 in Ithaca, N.Y.
