COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's basketball team jumped up four spots in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and moved up one position in the Associated Press rankings to No. 17 this week, the Terps' highest ranking of the season. It is the first time since the 1993-94 season Maryland is rated in the top 20 in both national rankings in the same week.
The Terrapins defeated intrastate rival Coppin State on Monday night, 83-51, at Comcast Center to extend their current win streak to six games, the longest since 2000-01.
Head coach Brenda Frese's Terrapins, who are 8-1, earned their first top-20 ranking of the season three weeks ago when the AP rated the young squad 19th. It was the Terps' first top-20 ranking in 11 years. They have improved in the rankings every week since then.
The No. 17 ranking in the Coaches Poll this week is the first top-20 rating in the poll for Maryland since Dec. 27, 1993 when it was ranked 20th. It is the highest since a No. 12 ranking on March 15, 1993. The Terps last appeared in the top 20 in both polls at the same time that same week.
Maryland is off from the action until it hosts the Terrapin Classic on Dec. 29 and 30. Marshall and Elon open the home tournament on the first day at 5 p.m. followed by the Terps and UMass at 7 p.m. Game one on Dec. 30 tips off at 5 p.m. Maryland plays Marshall or Elon at 7 p.m.
