Terps Conclude First Day At Southern Scuffle

    GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Maryland wrestling team concluded the first day of action in 13th place at the Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, N.C. The Terps had five wrestlers advance to the quarterfinal round, helping Maryland score 20 points on the first day. Wrestling will conclude tomorrow.

    Minnesota holds the early lead with 46 points, followed closely by Cornell (44.5). Edinboro is third with 31 points, and North Carolina is in fourth with 30.5 points.

    The Terps had Kevin Vinh (125), Charlie Pinto (141), Jason Kiessling (165), Luke Stauffer (174) and Jerry Afari (197) all advanced to the quarterfinals. However, Maryland went 0-5 in that round.

    Vinh pinned Ryan Broughman before losing to Minnesota's Bobby Lowe in the quarters. Pinto scored a major decision in his pigtail match and then defeated Edinboro's J.T. Taylor in the round of 16 before falling to Navy's Nate Gulosh, 6-2. Kiessling had an opening-round major decision before dropping a narrow 3-2 decision to Midshipman Deon Barrett.

    Stauffer picked up a pair of victories, including a 3-1 win over Levi Craig in the round of 16 before being downed by Minnesota's Gabriel Dretsch. Afari had a 5-4 win in the first round before losing a hard-fought 6-5 decision in the quarters.

    After an opening-round loss, Maryland's Jeff Oldham (125) picked up a pair of wins in the consolation bracket for the Terps.
