CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Maryland won four of 10 matches, but top-ranked and unbeaten Scott Moore sparked a comeback that lifted Virginia to a 25-15 victory over the Terrapins in an Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling match Wednesday at Memorial Gymnasium.
The Terps led 12-6 before the Cavaliers won five of the last six bouts.
In the 141-pound match, Moore recorded a win by fall over Maryland's Jason Gribschaw at 6:00 to improve his record to a perfect 41-0 with 29 wins coming by fall. Moore's 29 wins by fall this season is a new school record for most falls in a career at UVa. He broke former Virginia record holder Matt Roth's mark of 28 career falls from 1995-99.
Maryland and Virginia split the first two matches of the dual with the Terrapins' Sean Fehn posting a 4-2 decision over the Cavaliers' Drew Michelotti at 184 pounds before Virginia's Kevin Collier pinned Maryland's Jerry Afari at 1:52 at 197 pounds to give UVa an early 6-3 lead.
However, the Terrapins won back-to-back matches at heavyweight and 125 after Maryland's Barry Stein pinned Andrew Leffler at 1:12 in the heavyweight class before 125-pounder Matt Pandullo posted a 4-2 decision over the Cavaliers' Ryan Stewart. Pandullo's victory gave Maryland a 12-6 lead after four bouts.
Trailing by six team points, Virginia would go on to claim five consecutive victories to regain the lead for good. UVa's Steve Hromada got things started with a 10-4 decision at 133 over Mike Lupa to make it a 12-9 match before Virginia's Moore pinned Gribschaw at 6:00 at 141-pounds to give UVa the lead back for good at 15-12.
The Cavaliers' Aaron Martin increased UVa's lead to 18-12 by posting an 8-1 decision over Maryland's Jerad Villecco at 149 pounds. In the next match at 157 pounds, Virginia's Paul Bjorlo posted an 11-1 major decision victory over the Terrapins' Jason Kiessling to make the score 22-12.
At 165, UVa's 14th-ranked Tim Foley recorded Virginia's fifth consecutive victory with a close 7-5 win against Maryland's John Antonelli, bringing the Cavaliers' lead to 25-12. Maryland could only close the gap by three, winning the last match at 174 pounds as Pat Cissne defeated Virginia's Michael Grogan 14-8.
With the victory, Virginia's record improved to 9-5 overall, 3-1 in the ACC. The loss dropped Maryland's record to 3-9 overall, 0-4 in the conference.
Maryland returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 21st when the Terrapins travel to Fairfax, Va., to face the George Mason Patriots in a non-conference dual match at 2 p.m.
