Postgame Quotes: Duke At Maryland

Feb. 22, 2004

Recap |  Box Score

Duke head coach Gail Goestenkors
On Maryland's play in the second half:
We were happy to come away with the win. Maryland did a great job in the second half - I told my team at halftime that this Maryland team was not going to give up or quit. I expected for them to play more aggressive in the second half, and they did. They gained more confidence as the game went on.

On Maryland's success playing zone defense:
They played a lot of zone and they were giving us the outside shot. In the last seven games, we've been shooting over 50 percent from behind the three-point line. We've had confidence shooting three-pointers, they just weren't falling today.

On playing in front of 13,446 fans, the second-largest crowd in ACC women's basketball history:
There is a sense of excitement here. I know how that feels when you've been down for a long period of time. You can really sense the excitement surrounding this program right now. It was a great crowd. That just bodes well for our conference and for Maryland. It shows they have great fan support and that great things are coming for this program.

Maryland head coach Brenda Frese
On the total team effort against No. 4 Duke:
I've never been so proud of this team. To see us play with great heart and great intensity for 40 minutes was great. It was a fun game and a great atmosphere.

On the play of the seniors in their last home game:
Seeing the crowd, what a special night for our seniors. In this building process, they have laid the foundation for us. If we can play with the No. 4 team in the country, we can play with anyone. This game should give us a tremendous amount of confidence.

On Duke's program and Alana Beard:
We have a lot of respect for Duke and what they've accomplished and their tradition. That is where we want to take our program. It should give us a ton of confidence that we can play with anyone, especially with their All-Americans. To see the heart and the will that my team played with was exciting.

How does anyone stop Alana? She does so many things - score, rebound. It is hard to have one person stop her, and she did a tremendous job and stepped up like the All-American that she is.

On the crowd:
It is exciting to think about our future. It really starts with this team. To see 13,000 people come through the door says a lot about this team. Its so exciting to be a part of.

Maryland freshman guard Kalika France:
We knew it was Senior Day and the score was expanding. We wanted to make sure we battled and we didn't want to have any regrets.

Maryland senior Vicki Brick
I was trying to soak up every second of it - the last time out on that court. It was so much fun, listening to that crowd and being out there with my teammates.

Maryland senior Delvona Oliver
What a way to leave. I'm so glad I won't have to look back at my career and regret anything. I'd like to thank my teammates for coming out and playing so hard and the crowd was great.
