Postgame Quotes: Maryland 14, Georgetown 5

Feb. 28, 2004

Recap |  Box Score

Maryland Head Coach Dave Cottle
"This was a great performance for us. The second quarter was as good as I've seen us play. Our defense and offense were very strong all afternoon and this is a solid way to begin the season. It was a good day for Maryland.

"Maryland has young kids. We're playing four sophomores in our first six offensive players. But we're older on defense, and that's where we have to hang our hats."

Cottle On the Scoring Output:
"The scenarios that we planned for, none of them had us up 9-1 at halftime. I thought it was going to be a low-scoring game."

Maryland Sophomore Xander Ritz
"We had been shooting a lot more the past week in practice. My mind-set had changed from being a feeder to looking to shoot more. . . . It's not like we won the national championship today, it's only one game and we have 15 more. I think it's good just to get confidence."

Ritz On What Led To The Scoring Explosion
"It's been something we've worked on so much in practice because it's been such a question area for us. Our defense is so solid, so we focused a lot on stickwork in practice. From when we [scrimmaged] Loyola three weeks ago to now, our sticks have gotten better and we're just more confident with the ball in our stick. Every time we're on the field, whether it's first, second, third or fourth midfield, we have six guys who are really confident."

Maryland Graduate Student Tim McGinnis
"Once I got that first save it was a sigh of relief, but they were coming at me and I was lucky enough to make some saves."

Georgetown Head Coach Dave Urick
"Coming into today we knew Maryland was one of the better defensive teams in the country, and they didn't do anything today to change my mind.

"We got a number of guys today who got baptism under fire a little bit. They got a lesson learned the hard way what it takes to play at this level against a team that played very well.

"There's no easy ones on this schedule, and today was a good example. We need to build off this. We need to take a long, hard look at ourselves and see what we can do to get better."
