COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The University of Maryland Academic Support & Career Development Unit has announced the winners of the 2003-2004 CHAMPS/Life Skills Award, and for the second year in a row, the honorees are women's gymnastics and football.
The CHAMPS/Life Skills Award is given annually to the men's and women's team that best develops its athletes in the following five areas: athletic excellence, academic excellence, career development, personal development and commitment to service. Winners are determined by the amount of points a team earns by attending various events related to the five areas of development.
The Terp gymnastics team is always committed to the development of its squad members not only as athletes, but also as students and members of a community. In the fall of 2003, the team volunteered at events such as the annual Homecoming Parade, home volleyball games, a home football game and the Out of Sight Kidfest in Washington, D.C. Additionally, the team maintains a strong dedication to scholastics, as the squad has taken home the President's Cup for highest team GPA for the past five years.
The 2004 Terps continue their quest for athletic excellence this Saturday, as they will travel to Towson, Md., to compete in the Governor's Cup. Competition begins at 2 p.m. The Terps welcome your support when they are back in town on Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. versus No. 8 Iowa.
