COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Rutgers swept the final nine bouts after Maryland's Matt Pandullo won his final home match for the Terrapins, as the Scarlet Knights earned a 30-3 victory over the Terps in a non-conference dual wrestling match Saturday at Ritchie Coliseum.
Earlier in the day, Duke used a six-bout winning streak to capture a 25-9 victory over Maryland in a matchup of Atlantic Coast Conference opponents. In the final dual of the day, Rutgers won the final four bouts, including a fall and a major decision, to beat Duke, 28-6.
The losses dropped Maryland to 2-7 in dual matches this season, while Rutgers ended the day at 7-4 and Duke moved to 6-5 overall.
Pandullo, one of two Terrapins honored on Senior Day along with Matt Kenny, defeated Dan Hilt of Rutgers, 6-4 in overtime, in the opening bout of the second match. Pandullo got a takedown 30 seconds into the extra period to get the win.
From there, however, Rutgers reeled off nine straight victories, highlighted with a fall by Andy Roy over Pat Cissne at 5:44 of the 174-pound bout. Roy came into the day's action ninth nationally in the most recent Intermat rankings.
John Antonelli, who joins Pandullo as a Terrapin co-captain, also took his opponent into overtime, but Chris Ressa earned a 3-1 win for the Scarlet Knights at 165 pounds.
In the first match, Duke took a 6-0 lead over the Terrapins with a pair of victories before Jason Gribschaw defeated Daniel Shvartsman, 5-3, in a marathon. The two remained tied through the first overtime and tie-breaker periods, with the Maryland junior finally getting the decision with a takedown in the second tie-breaker.
Barry Stein also won for Maryland in the Duke match, pinning Patrick Keenum at 3:43 in the heavyweight bout. But the Blue Devils won each bout between 149 and 197 pounds to take control of the match.
"We didn't wrestle well today," said first-year Maryland coach Pat Santoro. "If you're going to win matches, we have to execute and wrestle harder."
In the final match, Rutgers led 12-6 before winning the final four bouts. Roy scored a 10-1 major decision over Levi Craig at 174 pounds, while Ramel Meekins pinned Roy Williams at 1:46 of the heavyweight bout to give the Scarlet Knights their sweep.
Donnie DeFilippis, Greg Austin and Amir Khan joined Roy with a pair of wins for Rutgers. Adam Benitez and Mike Mitchell won twice for Duke on the afternoon.
Maryland travels to Norfolk, Va., next Saturday for a double dual with Old Dominion and UNC Greensboro.
