GREENSBORO, N.C. - Coming off an 80-69 victory at Clemson, the Maryland women's basketball team clinched the fourth seed in the 27th Annual ACC Tournament which begins on Friday, March 5 at the Greensboro Coluiseum in Greensboro, N.C. The Terps open tournament action on Saturday, March 6 vs. fifth-seeded Florida State at 8:30 p.m.
The Terps evened their conference record at 8-8 with the win over the Tigers. Maryland, who is 16-11 overall, currently stands in fourth place in the ACC standings, a half game behind NC State who has one more game to play against Duke on Monday, March 1.
Maryland has made an amazing turnaround under second-year head coach Brenda Frese. The Terps were picked to finished eighth in the conference and could finish as high as third after tonight's game between the Wolfpack and the Blue Devils. The Terps doubled their ACC win total from each of the last two seasons and have surpassed or equaled its conference wins from nine of the last 10 years.
The Terps split the regular-season series with the Seminoles and both games were decided by less than 10 points. FSU won the first meeting, 82-77, in Tallahassee, Fla., while Maryland returned the favor in College Park winning a 76-67 decision.
Maryland has an all-time record of 35-18 in the ACC Tournament, winning the tournament title a conference-record eight times.
For the first time in league history, six of the eight ACC Tournament games are set to be televised. The opening-round game on Friday, as well as the first two quarterfinal games on Saturday, will be aired on the league's regional sports networks (Comcast SportsNet, FOX Sports Net South and Sunshine Network). Sunday's semifinal games and Monday's championship game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports Net.
