The Maryland gymnastics team took third place at its final home meet of the season Friday night, finishing with a 195.350 behind EAGL rivals No. 27 NC State and Pittsburgh and in front of Air Force. Highlighting the meet was senior Sarah Hoenig, in her final home meet as a Terrapin, who set a career-high 9.95 on the beam to claim her eighth beam title of the season.
The No. 29 Terps began the meet on the vault where they were forced to count one fall but received two solid scores of 9.875 from Hoenig and sophomore Rachel Martinez. The score was good enough to tie them for third behind first-place finishers Rachel Katz from NC State and Alyse Zeffiro from Pittsburgh, each with a 9.90. The 9.875 for Hoenig tied her career-high in the event. Also landing vaults were sophomore Rebecca Ruppert with a 9.750 and freshman Angie Ferg with a 9.650.
Rotating to the uneven bars, the Terps received a high score from junior Mandy Pascual, who notched a 9.875 to tie for third. Not far behind was junior Leah Brill, who took fifth with a score of 9.850. Freshman Rachel Colon also had a great outing, tying her career-high with a 9.80. Winning the event was NC State's Kylah Bachman and Marlyn Madey, tying for the title with 9.90s.
Maryland excelled on the balance beam, led by Hoenig's career-high 9.95. Martinez tied her career-high with a 9.925, coming in second behind Hoenig. Also matching a career-best mark was sophomore Alex Gatch, who posted a 9.90 and finished fifth overall. The Terps also received a high score from sophomore Cameron Logan, who contributed a 9.80 to the team total.
Concluding their night on the floor, the Terp squad combined for a 49.275 that was second only to NC State's 49.325. Scoring the team-high was sophomore Ginny Scott, who tied her career-high with a 9.925 to finish in second place. The score marked her third consecutive 9.925 on the event. Hoenig and sophomore Leah Brill both posted a 9.850, followed by sophomore Cameron Logan with a season-high 9.825. Freshman Marisa St. Louis tied Logan with an identical 9.825 and Martinez scored a 9.775 to round out the Terp floor lineup.
Martinez finished the all-around with a 39.200, good enough for third place in the meet. Taking first and second were NC State's Marlyn Madey and Kylah Bachman, with scores of 39.525 and 39.500, respectively.
In the team scores, NC State finished first with a season-high197.125, having to count no falls in the meet. Pittsburgh took second with a 195.700, followed by Maryland's 195.350, and Air Force in fourth with a 192.800. Next up for the Terps, as well as for NC State and Pittsburgh, is the EAGL Championships, held at Pittsburgh on March 20.
