  • * As the top-ranked team in the nation for the first time in three years, undefeated Maryland hosts No. 10 Virginia in a pivotal ACC game that is a rematch of the 2003 NCAA Semifinal held in Baltimore last May. The game will be broadcast live on College Sports Television (CSTV), which is available on DirecTV Channel 610 as well as various cable carriers across the nation. Carter Blackburn (play-by-play) and Quint Kessenich (color commentary) call the action. * The Terps (7-0) are one of just two undefeated teams in the country along with No. 11 Brown (5-0). They vaulted to the No. 1 ranking after beating No. 4 North Carolina in Chapel Hill last Saturday, 10-9 as previous No. 1 Johns Hopkins lost at Virginia, 9-8 in overtime. This week marks the Terps' first week as the nation's No. 1 team since the week of March 26, 2001 -- which was also the last time they began the year 7-0.

    * Of the Terps' 91 goals, a sophomore has either scored or assisted 70 of them (77 percent).

    * Saturday's game is a huge conference game as the Terps can clinch the outright regular-season championship with a win, that would make them 3-0 overall in the league for the first time in six years. Last season, the Terps finished in a three-way tie with Virginia and North Carolina for the top spot at 2-1. Maryland was awarded the No. 1 seed by virtue of a blind draw held by the ACC. Virginia opens its conference schedule with the first of three straight league games on Saturday. The last time Maryland went 3-0 in the ACC was in 1998 -- also the last time they won the ACC Tournament title. Prior to that season, 1989 was the last year Maryland was perfect in ACC play.

    * The Terps come off the 10-9 win at North Carolina as they came back from an 8-7 deficit entering the fourth quarter to win the ACC road game. Sophomore sensation and the ACC's leading scorer Joe Walters (Rochester, N.Y.) led the way with four goals as he notched his sixth hat trick in seven games this season. Walters leads the team and league in points with 30 and points per game (4.29). Freshman Mike Brown (West Hartford, Conn.) had a huge day, scoring the game-tying goal to make it 8-8 and the eventual game-winner for the team's 10th goal. Brown has two goals in each of the last three games. Graduate goalie Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, Md.) was named ACC Player of the Week on Monday after he posted 14 saves in the win at UNC as well as not allowing a goal in the first half of the Terps' 19-4 win over Butler on March 23. McGinnis (6.29 GAA) backstops the Terps' defense that has been tremendous led by senior captains Paul Gillette (Millersville, Md.), Chris Passavia (Stony Brook, N.Y.), and Lee Zink (Rowayton, Conn.). The trio are the top three on the team in groundballs with 30, 17 and 21, respectively. Passavia and Zink have combined for 40 caused turnovers in seven games.

    * Virginia, the defending national champion comes into the game after knocking off No. 1 Hopkins at Klockner Stadium last Saturday night. The Cavaliers are 3-4 overall having won their last two games in overtime by identical 9-8 scores. Prior to the win over the Blue Jays, Virginia won at Towson. The preseason No. 1 Cavaliers had a rough early season dropping four games in a row including a pair to unranked Air Force (7-6) and Denver (9-7). They then fell to Syracuse (18-12) and Princeton (8-7) and were 1-4 before the Towson win. Virginia has played four one-goal games including the last three, going 2-2 in those games. Attacker Matt Ward leads the Cavaliers with 15 goals and 24 total points. Juniors Joe Yevoli (9-9=18) and John Christmas (6-7=13) have started the year slow as the Wahoos' offense rounds into shape. They are averaging just 9.25 goals per game through seven contests. In goal, 2003 National Player of the Year Tillman Johnson has a 8.82 goals against average and a 55.9 save percentage.

Terps At Top of ACC, NCAA Stat Lists
    * Maryland is just one of two undefeated teams in the nation at 7-0 along with Brown (5-0). The Terps as a team are ranked among the nation's best in several statistics and have several players at the top the stat charts as well.

    * The Terps are second in the nation in total goals with 91. They also rank No. 5 in goals per game at 13.00 -- also the best in the conference.

    * On defense, Maryland has the seventh-best goals against average at 6.71 per game, that mark also tops the ACC.

    * The Terps are also third in the country in goal-scoring margin at +6.29 per game.

    * Individually, Joe Walters leads the ACC in scoring with 30 as well as in points per game at 4.29. His total points ranks him third in the nation while the points per game is eighth overall.

    * Walters is also tied for second in the nation in total goals with 21. North Carolina's Jed Prossner is first in goals with 22.

    * In goal, Tim McGinnis is fifth in the nation in goals against average with a 6.29 GAA. He is also 10th in country in save percentage at 64.2, which is also the best in the ACC.

    * Checking other ACC stat charts, Joe Walters leads in game-winning goals with three. Xander Ritz (Wayne, Pa.) ranks third in the league in assists (11) and assists per game (1.57).

    The Maryland-Virginia Rivalry
    * The Maryland-Virginia rivalry is the third-longest in Terrapin lacrosse history with Maryland holding a 41-29 advantage, dating to the first game -- a Terps' 10-1 victory on April 24, 1926. The 41 wins are the third-highest number of victories Maryland has against any team. The Terps have defeated Duke 51 times and Navy 47 times.

    * The rivals met twice every year for six years in a row from 1996 to 2001 before the streak ended in 2002. Last season they continued with the double meetings as the Terps won in Charlottesville on March 29, 8-7. Virginia returned the favor beating the Terps 14-4 in the NCAA Semifinals at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on May 24.

    * In the regular-season game, No. 7 Maryland scored seven consecutive goals and kept Virginia scoreless for a span of 33:06 on its way to the 8-7 victory over the No. 2 Cavaliers. Maryland won at Klockner Stadium for the first time since the 1998 ACC Championship game which it defeated the host Cavaliers, 14-11. It was also the Terps' first regular-season win at Klockner Stadium and first in Charlottesville, Va. since 1989. The Terps held off a furious comeback as Virginia scored the final three goals of the game including two in the final 1:39 to come within one as Joe Yevoli scored with 1:23 left. But goalie Danny McCormick was tremendous in the final minute of action as he stopped Virginia's leading goal scorer John Christmas on a point- blank shot with 49 seconds left and started a Maryland clear as the Terps preserved the win. Attacker Joe Walters racked up a hat trick and added an assist for a team-high four points.

    * In the NCAA Semifinals, goalie Tillman Johnson made spectacular save after spectacular save en route to a 14-4 victory over No. 3 Maryland in front of a record crowd of 37,823 and a national television audience on ESPN2. Johnson recorded a career-high 18 saves and a stifling Cavalier defense kept the Terrapin offense off the scoreboard for much of the day. Although Terrapin defenders Michael Howley and Brett Harper held Virginia's top two scorers, John Christmas and Chris Rotelli scoreless, Matt Ward paced the Virginia attack with four goals and an assist. Joe Yevoli also tallied five points on three goals and two assists. Four Terrapins scored one goal apiece, including All-American Mike Mollot, and then-freshman Brendan Healy (Great Falls, Va.), who scored his first career goal in the loss.

    * Virginia won the last meeting at Byrd Stadium, 11-10 at Byrd Stadium on March 30, 2002, as John Christmas scored four goals for the Cavs in the win.

    * Prior to last season's NCAA Semifinal, Maryland won all three meetings in the NCAA Tournament. The Terps topped the Cavaliers in a pair of first round games in 1978 and 1983 and won a 1997 quarterfinal game, 10-9, played at Byrd Stadium. In that last NCAA meeting, All-Americans Andrew Whipple and Frank Radin each scored twice as the Terps outshot Virginia 64-27.

    * The Terps captured their first and only ACC Tournament championship defeating Virginia, 14-11, in Charlottesville on April 19, 1998, the same year Maryland won its last regular-season title with a win over Virginia, 14-9, on March 28.

    * During the 1990s, Virginia won nine of the 16 meetings. Half of those games were decided by one goal with each team winning four of the cliff-hangers.

    Coaching Match-Up
    * Maryland head coach Dave Cottle is currently the third winningest active coach in the country with a 72.8 win percentage with a record of 209-78. He is also 28-8 as head coach of the Terps. Starsia has won 71.3 percent of his games at Brown and Virginia (229-92 overall record) and is fourth on the list. In the total wins among active coaches Starsia is fifth and Cottle is eighth.

    * Cottle has a 4-7 record vs. Virginia. He went 3-5 vs. Virginia while he was the coach at Loyola, but none of the games came against a Dom Starsia-led team. Cottle is 1-2 against the Wahoos while at Maryland. Prior to 2002, the last time Cottle coached against Virginia came in 1991, finishing a run of eight games in a nine-year span.

    * Both Starsia and Cottle began their head coaching careers in 1983, Cottle at Loyola and Starsia at Brown. Despite both coaches running major programs for the last 20 years, they have only coached against each other seven times with Starsia winning five of the games, including his last game at Brown, a 19-12 win in the NCAA Tournament first round in 1992 -- the only other time they have coached against each other in the NCAA Tournament prior to last season.

    Terps' High-scoring Offense
    * The Terps' offense has continued to be a major story early in 2004, as Maryland is averaging 13.00 goals per game through the first five weeks of action -- fifth in the nation. The Terps have scored at least 14 goals in four of seven games. Maryland blasted Duke for a 17-12 ACC win in Durham on March 6 -- for its most goals in an ACC game since 1983. The 19 goals vs. Butler are tied for the second-most by any team in Division I this season and are the most by a Terp team since 2002.

    * The Terps have looked to underclassmen for much of their offense as 54 of the 91 goals (59 percent) have come from sophomores with a quartet of second-year players topping the team in points: Joe Walters, Xander Ritz, Bill McGlone (Swarthmore, Pa.) and Brendan Healy. Overall, sophomores have been involved in 70 of the Terps' 91 goals this season with either the goal or assist (77 percent).

    * Attacker Joe Walters continues to lead the way, as he has 21 goals -- scoring three or more in six of seven games this season. He netted a career-high tying four goals at Duke and was named ACC Player of the Week on March 8. He has tallied at least three goals in each of his last four games and had seven goals last week after his sixth career four-goal outburst at North Carolina on March 27. He posted a career-high seven points vs. Bucknell. He has at least one goal in 21 of his 23 career games at Maryland. Overall, he has 76 career points (3.30 ppg). Walters also has three of the team's six game-winning goals in 2004 -- also most in the ACC. Walters netted his 50th career goal in his 22nd career game vs. Butler.

    * Attacker Xander Ritz has been an infusion of talent on attack after transferring from Delaware. He is currently second on the team in points with 18 on seven goals and a team-high 11 assists. He had his career game in the season opener at Georgetown on Feb. 28 -- his Terrapin debut -- as he had three goals and four assists for seven points. He was named Inside Lacrosse's National Player of the Week as well as ACC Co-Player of the Week. He had a goal and two assists in the win over Towson on March 13 and added a goal vs. Bucknell. He had two assists at UMBC as well as a goal and assist vs. Butler. He has at least one point in each game this season after he assisted two goals at North Carolina. Overall, dating to last season at Delaware, he has a 10-game point streak.

    * Midfielder Bill McGlone is second in goals with 13 and third in points with 16. He had his biggest game as a Terp at Duke on March 6, as he tallied his first career hat trick and added two assists for a five-point day. McGlone surpassed last season's totals of four goals and five points, in just two games -- as he is running with the first midfield. He had one goal in each game over a three game stretch before busting out for a career-high four goals vs. Butler. He is the only Terp besides Walters to have scored a goal in every game this season.

    * Sophomore midfielder Brendan Healy is fourth in scoring with 13 points on eight goals and five assists. Against Towson, as he scored two goals and added an assist for a career-best three points. Towson was also his first multi-goal game as a Terp. He notched his first-career hat trick vs. Bucknell and added a goal and assist at UMBC. He posted a goal and two assists vs. Butler for his third three-point game this season.

    * Senior midfielder Justin Smith (University Park, Md.) has been the steady upperclassman on the first line, as he has nine goals in 2004. He had his first-career hat trick as a Terp vs. Towson and scored two more vs. Bucknell. Smith was held pointless for the first time this season at UMBC. He got back on track with a goal vs. Butler. Overall, he has 38 goals in his last 30 games.

    * Senior attacker J.R. Bordley also had his most productive day as a Terp at Duke, as he scored back-to-back goals in a 4-0 run in the second quarter and added an assist for a career-high three points. He returned to action at UMBC, and scored in the first quarter. He has four goals and three assists in six starts this year.

    * Freshman attacker Mike Brown has been a key player of late, scoring two goals in each of the last three games at UMBC, vs. Butler and at North Carolina. Overall, he is the top freshman goal scorer with seven markers and nine points. Brown netted the game-tying goal and the eventual game-winner at UNC. Classmate Michael Phipps (Severna Park, Md.) also has eight points on four goals and four assists. He scored back-to-back goals in 59 seconds at UNC.

    More On The Super "O"
    * The Terps have been sensational in the first half, as they have outscored opponents 50-13 in the first 30 minutes.

    * The second quarter has been the knockout quarter for the Terps as they have outscored their opponents, 30-7, in the second period. Against Georgetown, they built a 2-1 first-quarter lead to a 9-1 halftime lead with a 7-0 second quarter. Against Duke, it was more of the same, as the Terps outscored the Blue Devils, 6-1, in the second period to break a 4-4 tie and lead 8-4 at half. The Terps outscored Towson and UMBC, 3-1 in the second period. In the Butler win, UM scored four goals in the second to build a 10-0 halftime lead.

    * In seven games, the Terps have had 20 different goal scorers. On three occasions, nine or more players have scored goals in a game, showing the Terps are certainly spreading the wealth. In the win at Duke, 11 players scored goals including five players who tallied their first career goals: freshman Mike Brown, junior Peter Ellis (Ross, Calif.), sophomore Ryan Lang (Northport, N.Y.), junior Dave Matz (Woodstock, Vt.) and freshman Michael Phipps.

    * Nine Terps scored vs. Bucknell including Phipps and Matz with their second goals of the year. Sophomore Bret Caretsky (Northport, N.Y.) tallied his first career goal in the win.

    * Against Butler, a season-high 12 players scored goals and 17 had points. Four players tallied their first career goals in the win: redshirt freshmen Brent Hargest (Cockeysville, Md.) and Patrick Howell (Arlington, Va.), freshman Thomas Alford (Washington, D.C.), who had two goals and junior college transfer Terence Dorsey (Baltimore, Md.).

    * Maryland's extra-man unit is 6-for-16 this season (37.5 percent) through seven games. They were a perfect 4-for-4 in the win at Georgetown, scoring once in each quarter. Walters, McGlone, Justin Smith and Ian Healy tallied the goals. The last time Maryland netted four extra-man goals was in the 2003 opener against Duke, as they went 4-for-6. The perfect day was especially sweet as the Terps worked hard on improving the EMO. Last season, they scored just four goals on their final 41 man-up chances spanning the final 10 games. Smith had his second EMO goal vs. Towson.

    The Terps' Stifling Defense
    * With all the talk of the Terps' offense clicking at such a high rate, the heralded defense has been equally impressive this season. Maryland has been strong on defense in seven games, limiting opponents to a 6.71GAA, seventh in the nation. Over the last five games, the team GAA is 6.00 including reigning ACC Player of the Week Tim McGinnis with a 5.31 personally in the five games.

    * Similar to last season, Maryland has held opponents scoreless for long stretches of game time. In 16 games last season, the Terps kept opponents scoreless for stretches of 20 or more minutes on 10 occasions. They have done it four times already this season in six games.

    * Against Georgetown, the Hoyas were held off the board for 23:22 spanning the first quarter to the early third quarter. The Hoyas trailed 9-1 at halftime, scoring just once in the game's first 34:05. Georgetown turned the ball over 25 times, with 14 of them being forced by a Terp. Senior captain and All-American Lee Zink led the way with four caused turnovers.

    * Maryland pitched a shutout for the first 29:10 of the Towson game, before allowing a goal with 50 seconds left in the first half. Maryland then shutout the Tigers for the entire third quarter -- limiting them to one goal over the game's first 49:37.

    * Against Bucknell, the Terps held the Bison scoreless until 11:54 left in the first half, marking the second game in a row they have blanked an opponent in the first quarter. Bucknell was also held to just one goal until 12 seconds were left in the first half -- a stretch of 29:48, allowing just one goal.

    * At UMBC, it was more of the same, as the stifling defense kept the Retrievers off the board for 29:12 bridging the second through fourth quarters. After scoring early in the fourth quarter, Maryland locked them down for the next 10:40 -- allowing just one goal in 39:52. Tim McGinnis made eight saves in the fourth quarter at UMBC, allowing just four goals all game.

    * The Butler game provided the best shutdown defense for the Terps, as they held the Bulldogs off the scoreboard for the first 39:11, shutting them out in the first half. Once Butler scored with 5:49 left in the third quarter, they did not allow another goal until the final minute of the quarter -- giving up one goal in 44:28.

    Top-Notch Defenders
    * In goal, graduate student Tim McGinnis has allowed six or fewer goals in five of seven games this season. Overall, he has a 6.29 goals against average and a 64.2 save percentage. He had a season-high 15 saves in the win over Towson, giving up just one goal through the first 49:37. He had 13 saves at UMBC including eight in the fourth quarter. He blanked Butler for the entire first half. Against No. 4 North Carolina, he made 14 saves and gave up nine goals to the high-scoring Tar Heels and was named ACC Player of the Week.

    * Senior captains and All-Americans Chris Passavia (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and Lee Zink (Rowayton, Conn.) have been stellar this season. They have sliced and diced their opponents, combining to force 40 turnovers in seven games. Passavia leads the team with 21.They have combined to scoop up 38 groundballs as well to rank second and third in the team - Zink (21) and Passavia (17). The duo has consistently shut down opponents' top scoring threats. They held Georgetown's All-American tandem of Walid Hajj and Neal Goldman to one assist between the two. Passavia forced Duke's top scorer Matt Danowski into six turnovers. Against Bucknell, the Terps held the nation's leading scorer Chris Cara to just one goal, as he came into the game averaging over six points a game. Butler's top player Kyle Tietjen, who came into the Maryland game with the most goals in the nation was also held scoreless. Against UNC, Scott Falatach was held to one assist by Zink, while that week's national top goal-scorer Jed Prossner was forced into six turnovers by Passavia.

    * Other defenders have stepped up their play including fellow senior captain Dave Wagner (Severna Park, Md.) along with juniors Gavin Webb (Columbus, Ohio) and Tyler Hereth (Glastonbury, Conn.) and have been valuable contributors. In his first season as a starter, Wagner has 14 groundballs. Webb has 16 groundballs in his time.

    * Captain and short-stick defensive midfielder Paul Gillette has been steady and consistent as usual and leads the team with 30 groundballs through seven games, with seven coming at Duke where he also scored and assisted a goal. The team's unsung hero also has assists in three of the last four games and has five total points, seeing time on the second midfield in addition to his defensive duties. * Short-stick defenders Drew Virk (Ross, Calif.), Ryan Lang (Northport, N.Y.) and Ian Healy have been strong in helping the defense as well.

    Terps' 79th Season of Lacrosse
    * The Terps have an all-time record of 644-205-4, dating back to the first varsity team in 1924 (a team was not fielded in 1944 and 1945 due to World War II). Maryland has finished every one of its previous 78 seasons with a .500 or better record, including last season when the Terps went 12-4. The program's 600th win came against Duke on April 21, 2000, 7-6 in the ACC Semifinals at Byrd Stadium.

    * Since 2000, Maryland is 52-16 for a .764 win percentage. In the decade of the 1990s, Maryland recorded its most wins in any decade with a 95-47 record. The .669 winning percentage matched Maryland's win percentage of the 1980s when the Terps went 83-41 and also compiled a .669 win percentage.

    100th Maryland/Hopkins Game: April 17, 2004
    * Maryland will play Johns Hopkins for the 100th time in lacrosse history on April 17, 2004. The game will be played at Hopkins' Homewood Field in Baltimore. It will be televised live on WMAR Channel 2 in Baltimore and nationally on College Sports Television (CSTV).

    * Maryland and Hopkins are the two most storied lacrosse programs in the nation, with the rivalry beginning with back in 1895 as Hopkins defeated the Maryland Agricultural College. The Blue Jays (32) and Terps (26) have played in the first and third most NCAA Tournaments since the event began in 1971, respectively. Maryland (108) and Hopkins (172) have produced the most first team All-Americans in the history of lacrosse dating to the first awards in 1922.

    * This year's historic event will feature both teams wearing "throwback jerseys." The Terps will wear the mode of the early 70s when they won two NCAA championships including the 1973 title when they beat the Blue Jays in double-overtime, 10-9 on June 2, 1973.

    * The logo to the right will be worn by both teams on their commemorative jerseys. Following the game, the jerseys will be auctioned off for charity with Maryland's funds going to the Ronald McDonald House of Baltimore. Hopkins' money will go to the Hopkins Children's Hospital.

    * Overall, Hopkins holds a 62-36-1 lead in the series. Since the Terrapins elevated to a varsity sport in 1924, Maryland has a 36-52-1 record against Johns Hopkins. There has been at least one Maryland-Hopkins game every year since 1924 with the exception of 1944 and 1945 when World War II kept the schools from fielding teams.
