The Maryland women's basketball team travels to Greensboro, N.C., for the 27th Annual ACC Tournament which begins Friday, March 5 and runs through Monday, March 8. Seeded fourth in the tournament, the Terps open their postseason action against fifth-seeded Florida State on Saturday, March 6 at 8:30 p.m.
Maryland's fourth seed is its highest since the 1997 ACC Tournament and its third-place showing in the league is considerably better than predicted in the ACC Preseason poll, which picked the Terps would finish eighth. The third-place finish is the Terps' best since tying for third at the end of the 1996-97 campaign.
The Terps are 16-11 on the year and ended the ACC slate with an 8-8 mark, doubling their conference win total from each of the last two seasons. The eight wins also equals or surpasses their ACC wins from nine of the last 10 years. Maryland is coming off of an 80-69 victory at Clemson on Feb. 29 which clinched the fourth seed in the conference tournament.
Florida State was the first team in the league to finish the season and has not seen action since a 71-58 setback vs. North Carolina on Feb. 26. The Seminoles are 14-13 overall and 7-9 in conference play.
The Terps have a long tradition of excellence in the ACC Tournament, claiming a conference-record eight ACC Tournament crowns. Maryland also boasts the best winning percentage in the tournament of any conference team at .660.
The tournament tips off on Friday, March 5 at 11:00 a.m. with #8 Georgia Tech and #9 Wake Forest battling to face top-seeded Duke in the quarterfinals on Saturday, March 6 at 2:30 p.m. The winner of that quarterfinal matchup faces the winner of the Terps-Seminoles game in the semifinal round on Sunday, March 7 at 1:00 p.m. The championship game will be played on Monday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m. All semifinal games and the title matchup will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net.
