For the 100th Time, It's Maryland vs. Hopkins
* Lacrosse's greatest rivalry renews for the 100th time this Saturday as Maryland will play Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field in Baltimore. The game will be televised live on WMAR Channel 2 in Baltimore and nationally on College Sports Television (CSTV). Scott Garceau, Keith Mills and Mark Dixon call the game. The game will also be available live over the Internet at WMUCSports.com with live stats available on umterps.com.
* Maryland and Hopkins are the two most storied lacrosse programs in the nation, with the rivalry beginning with back in 1895 as Hopkins defeated the Maryland Agricultural College. The Blue Jays (32) and Terps (26) have played in the first and third most NCAA Tournaments since the event began in 1971, respectively. Maryland (108) and Hopkins (171) have produced the most first team All-Americans in the history of lacrosse dating to the first awards in 1922.
* This year's historic event will feature both teams wearing "throwback jerseys." The Terps will wear the model of the early 70s when they won two NCAA championships including the 1973 title when they beat the Blue Jays in double-overtime, 10-9, on June 2, 1973.
* The 100th game logo will be worn by both teams on their commemorative jerseys. Following the game, the jerseys will be auctioned off for charity with Maryland's funds going to the Ronald McDonald House of Baltimore. Hopkins' money will go to the Hopkins Children's Hospital.
* Prior to the game, a special ceremony will take place saluting honorary captains from both programs. Maryland will be represented by a pair of former coaches: Bud Beardmore and
Dick Edell. Beardmore coached the Terps from 1970-80, leading them to two NCAA Championships in 1973 and 1975. A member of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, Beardmore went 91-26 (77.8) in 11 seasons in College Park. Edell coached the Terps from 1984-2001, leading the Terrapins to 13 NCAA Tournaments and three title games (1995, 97 and 98). He was 171-76 (69.2) in his 18 seasons leading Maryland. Hopkins' representatives will be former coach Bob Scott (1955-74), and Henry Ciccarone, Jr., son of former coach Henry Ciccarone (1975-83)
* Overall, Hopkins holds a 62-36-1 lead in the series. Since the Terrapins elevated to a varsity sport in 1924, Maryland has a 36-55-1 record against Johns Hopkins. There has been at least one Maryland-Hopkins game every year since 1923 with the exception of 1944 and 1945 when World War II kept the schools from fielding teams.
This Year's Match-Up Of Top Three Teams
* It's only fitting that Maryland and Hopkins are ranked in the top three this week as they head into the historic game. No. 3 Maryland is 8-1 overall coming off a 9-6 upset loss to Navy last Saturday at Byrd Stadium before 6,860 fans. The ACC's leading scorer Joe Walters (Rochester, N.Y.) tallied his seventh hat trick in nine games this season in the loss. Overall, Walters leads the Terps in points (38) and goals (25). The Terps had been undefeated and ranked No. 1 for two weeks prior to the loss at the hands of Midshipmen. Graduate goalie Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, Md.) made 11 saves in his first loss as a Terp. Overall, he has a 6.17 goals against average and a 66.2 save percentage, both rank second in the nation.
* Johns Hopkins regained its No. 1 ranking after spending most of the season atop the national polls after Maryland lost to Navy and the Blue Jays beat Duke, 6-5, last Saturday. The Jays come into the game with a 7-1 record, suffering their only defeat at Virginia on March 27, losing in overtime, 8-7. Hopkins rebounded with a 10-9 win over North Carolina and last week's win over the Blue Devils as it concludes a three- ACC swing against Maryland. Hopkins is led by Conor Ford, who tops the team in points (27) and goals (20). Kyle Barrie has 15 goals and 23 points. Kyle Harrison leads the team in groundballs with 47, while also winning 63.5 percent of his face-offs. In goal, Scott Smith has started the last seven games and has a 6.77 goals against average overall with a 59.3 save percentage.
Maryland-Hopkins Series History
* The last three games in the series have been one-goal affairs -- with the last two going to overtime -- and four of the last six have been one-goal games. Maryland last won in the series at Byrd Stadium in dramatic fashion, 10-9, on April 14, 2001, as the No. 5 Terps scored four fourth-quarter goals to overcome a 8-6 deficit entering the final stanza. 2001 first team All-American Pat McGinnis -- brother of current Terp goalie Tim McGinnis -- made a career-high 21 saves and was named the WMAR Player of the Game in the win.
* Hopkins has won the last two games, both in overtime. In the last game at Homewood Field between the teams, on April 13, 2002, Kyle Barrie scored with 1:45 left in the first overtime to give the Jays the 9-8 win. Last season, Joe McDermott scored the game-winner 1:21 into overtime for the 6-5 Hopkins win at Byrd Stadium on April 12, 2003.
* This year's historic 100th game is the 14th straight meeting between the teams when each was ranked in the top-eight in the nation. In seven of the last 11 meetings, the team with a lesser ranking has won the game, including two of the last four games as No. 5 Maryland beat No. 2 Hopkins in 2001 and No. 8 Hopkins defeated No. 7 Maryland in 2000.
* This game also marks the eighth time in the last 21 meetings that either Maryland or Hopkins comes into the game ranked No. 1. In those eight games, the No. 1-ranked team has been upset by the lower-ranked team three times with the most recent occurrence coming in 1997 as the No. 6 Hopkins squad handed the top-ranked Terps their first loss after an 8-0 start.
* Last seson, Hopkins came into the game as the No. 1 team and won in overtime. Prior to that occurance the last time Hopkins came into the rivalry ranked No. 1, Maryland handed the Jays a 16-8 loss in the NCAA Semifinals at Byrd Stadium on May 27, 1995.
* Since 1978, this will be the 14th time in 34 games the Maryland-Hopkins battle has featured the nation's No. 1 team and the 17th time in 34 games that both teams were ranked in the top five in the nation. The No. 1 team won 13 of the previous games in which it played in the series.
Current Terps Vs. Hopkins
* Of the Terps' current roster three players have scored against Hopkins -- with all three goals coming in last year's meeting at Byrd Stadium. Joe Walters, Paul Gillette (Millersville, Md.) and Justin Smith (University Park, Md.) all tallied goals. Ian Healy (Great Falls, Va.) added an assist in the loss.
The Terps Against No. 1
* Maryland has beaten the No. 1 team in the nation four times since 1987 including three times since 1995. In fact, the Terps have posted wins over the No. 1-ranked team in three of their last six games with the top-ranked team. Of those wins, the last two have come when the Terps were ranked No. 5. And all four came at Byrd Stadium.
* Maryland's last win over a No. 1 team -- ironically -- came against current head coach Dave Cottle and Loyola, as No. 5 Maryland upset the top-ranked Greyhounds, 19-8, in the NCAA Semifinals at Byrd Stadium on May 23, 1998.
* The Terps beat No. 1 Virginia on March 30, 1996 with a 13-11 win at Byrd.
* Maryland also defeated a No. 1 Johns Hopkins team the last time the Jays came into the series ranked No. 1, with a 16-8 victory on May 27, 1995, in the NCAA Semifinals at Byrd Stadium.
Maryland-Hopkins Connections
* Despite being bitter rivals, Maryland-Hopkins still have many notable connections.
* Brothers will be on opposing sidelines as Maryland junior midfielder Andrew Schwartzman (Owings Mills, Md.) faces brother Jesse Schwartzman, a freshman reserve goalie for the Blue Jays.
* Hopkins' top play-maker and preseason All-American Kevin Boland is the son of former Terrapin Kevin Boland (1973-77), who played with the Terps on the 1973 NCAA Championship team which beat Hopkins for the national championship, 10-9 in overtime. The senior Boland scored two goals in the 1974 championship game which saw Johns Hopkins beat Maryland, 17-12.
* Hopkins freshman attacker Jake Byrne is the brother of Matt Hahn (1995-98), Maryland's all-time leading goal scorer with 149 goals. Hahn is also 11th on the Terps' all-time scoring list with 180 career points. Hahn scored three goals in both the Terrapins' 1995 NCAA Semifinal and 1998 NCAA Quarterfinal wins over Hopkins.
* Now is his 21st season as a Maryland assistant coach, Dave Slafkosky is a 1974 graduate of Johns Hopkins, where he played lacrosse from 1972-74. He helped the Blue Jays to the 1974 title, beating Maryland in the championship game, one year after the Terps had beaten Slafkosky and the Blue Jays in the title game.
* Maryland's other assistant coach Paul Cantabene, served as an assistant coach at Johns Hopkins from 1996-98, helping the Blue Jays to three NCAA Tournaments. Cantabene is in his second year as a Terp assistant coach under Dave Cottle.
* Both teams have a high volume of players who played together in high school. Check the list to the right.

* Maryland head coach Dave Cottle is currently the third winningest active coach in the country with a 72.6 win percentage with a record of 210-79. He is also 29-9 (76.2) as head coach of the Terps. He is 64-26 overall in seven years as a coach for a 71.1 win percentage at both Hopkins and Cornell.
* Coach Dave Cottle has won three of 12 career games against Hopkins, 10 of which came while coaching at Loyola. He led the Greyhounds to back-to-back wins against Hopkins in 1998 (10-7) and 1999 (14-5). Against coach Dave Pietramala, Cottle is 0-3, as his Loyola team dropped a 13-10 decision on May 4, 2001, in addition to the pair of overtime loss to Hopkins in the last two years while he has been at Maryland.

Joe Walters, Bill McGlone, Justin Smith and Ian Healy tallied the goals. The last time Maryland netted four extra-man goals was in the 2003 opener against Duke, as they went 4-for-6. Smith, Walters and Ritz each have two EMO goals.
The Terps' Stifling Defense
* With all the talk of the Terps' offense clicking at such a high rate, the heralded defense has been equally impressive this season. * Against Bucknell, the Terps held the Bison scoreless until 11:54 left in the first half, marking the second game in a row they have blanked an opponent in the first quarter. Bucknell was also held to just one goal until 12 seconds were left in the first half -- a stretch of 29:48, allowing just one goal.
* At UMBC, it was more of the same, as the stifling defense kept the Retrievers off the board for 29:12 bridging the second through fourth quarters. After scoring early in the fourth quarter, Maryland locked them down for the next 10:40 -- allowing just one goal in 39:52. Tim McGinnis made eight saves in the fourth quarter at UMBC, allowing just four goals all game.
* The Butler game provided the best shutdown defense for the Terps, as they held the Bulldogs off the scoreboard for the first 39:11, shutting them out in the first half. Once Butler scored with 5:49 left in the third quarter, they did not allow another goal until the final minute of the quarter -- giving up one goal in 44:28.
* Maryland had is best defensive performance of the season against defending national champion Virginia as they held the Cavaliers to just two goals -- their lowest total since May 1984. * Captain and short-stick defensive midfielder Paul Gillette has been steady and consistent as usual and leads the team with 40 groundballs through nine games. He had a season high of seven coming at Duke where he also scored and assisted a goal. The team's unsung hero also has assists in five of the last six games and has seven total points, seeing time on the second midfield in addition to his defensive duties. Gillette is currently seventh on the Terps' all-time groundballs list with 190. He has 106 o ver the last two seasons.
* Short-stick defenders Drew Virk (Ross, Calif.) and Ryan Lang have been strong in helping the defense as well. Virk has 19 groundballs and has been an effective face-off man winning 16-of-29 draws for 55.2 percent.
