BOWIE, Md. - The University of Maryland baseball team lost a heartbreaker to the University of Virginia on Saturday at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, Md., by a score of 7-6 in 11 innings. The Terrapins rallied back from a 6-0 deficit in the seventh to send the game into extra innings.
The Cavaliers (31-7, 13-4 ACC) built up an early lead over the Terrapins (16-20, 2-12 ACC), scoring a pair of runs in three separate innings to carry a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Terrapins started a comeback at that point, scoring their first run on sophomore Brian Jarosinski's 13th home run of the season.
Maryland brought in three more runs in the eighth inning to cut the Cavaliers' lead to two. Sophomore Matt Maropis led off the inning with a double and scored when the next batter, senior Anthony Buffone, knocked him in with a single through the left side. Buffone later came around to score on a wild pitch. Junior Jason Maxey brought in Jarosinski, who singled, with a single to right for the Terps' final run of the inning.
The Terrapins went into the bottom of the ninth down by two, but fought back to tie the game at six. Junior Bobby Ryan led off the inning with a walk and scored on a Maropis double to left center. Junior Will Frazier brought around the game-tying run later in the inning by singling up the middle.
Two innings later the Cavaliers were able to get one more run on the board. The run proved to be the game-winner as the Terrapins were unable to match it in the 11th inning.
Maropis led the Terrapins offensively in the game, scoring two runs and recording one RBI while going 4-for-6 at the plate. Jarosinski was the other Terrapin with multiple hits, picking up three while scoring two runs with an RBI.
On the mound for the Terrapins, junior Sean Kane pitched six innings with three strikeouts in the start. Freshman Casey Baron and sophomore Brad Newman each pitched .2 innings of scoreless of relief. Freshman Dan Waters did not allow a hit in one inning of work while junior Justin Hulse came out of the bullpen to pitch two innings without allowing an earned run.
The Terps will meet the Cavaliers again tomorrow for the series finale at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, Md., beginning at 1 p.m.
