COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Possessing the ability to balance school work and a varsity sport, several Terp gymnasts have earned academic accolades this year. In addition to having 12 student-athletes on the ICA Honor Roll and EAGL All-Academic Team, the squad boasts special accomplishments by junior Mandy Pascual and sophomore Cameron Logan.
Pascual, a chemical engineering major, was recently honored at the James A. Clark School of Engineering Honors and Awards ceremony on April 14. She received the National Capital Section of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers Award, partially supported by ExxonMobil. The award is presented to a chemical engineering student in recognition of his or her contributions in an academic and societal environment. Pascual was also honored on the 2004 ICA Honor Roll and EAGL All-Academic Team, and was a Verizon Academic All-District honoree in 2003.
Also excelling in the classroom is sophomore Cameron Logan, who will graduate in 2004 with a degree in English. In addition to completing all her credits for graduation in just two years, Logan was selected to study abroad this summer in Europe and plans to attend graduate school upon her return. Logan also earned spots on the ICA and EAGL academic squads for the past two years.
Other Terp gymnasts graduating this year are seniors Sarah Hoenig, Rachel Sibert and Katherine Schroeder. All three were honored on the EAGL All-Academic team this season, and for Sibert and Schroeder it marked their fourth time on the list in four years at Maryland.
The Terp gymnastics team's dedication to scholastics is a longstanding part of the program, as the squad won the President's Cup for highest GPA of a women's athletic team five consecutive times from 1999-2003. For the past three years, it has also won the CHAMPS/Life Skills Award for athletic excellence, academic excellence, career development, personal development and commitment to service.
