ACC Honors All Around for Terps
* The ACC Champion Terps have had a huge week of accolades from the conference. * Maryland head coach Dave Cottle was named ACC Coach of the Year after leading the Terps to the league title and a perfect 5-0 record in games against ACC teams. The last and only other Terp coach to be honored by the league was Dick Edell in 1989, 92 and 98.
* With his huge performance in the ACC Tournament, Joe Walters was named MVP of the event. He posted a career-high six goals in the championship game and added an assist to his career-best for points with seven. Walters is the first Terp to earn Tournament MVP since Scott Hochstadt, who set the event record for goals in a game with seven -- one more than Walters -- in 1998.
* Joining Walters on the ACC All-Tournament team were five other Terps: senior attacker J.R. Bordley (Vienna, Va.), senior midfielder Paul Gillette (Millersville, Md.), graduate goalie Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, Md.), senior defenseman Chris Passavia (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and senior defenseman Lee Zink.
* At the ACC Tournament banquet on April 22, three Terps were named to the All-ACC Team. Chris Passavia was named to the team for the third time. Inside the Irish
* No. 12 Notre Dame enters the game with a 7-4 record and is riding a five-game winning streak. The Irish closed their Great Western Lacrosse League schedule with four straight wins over Air Force (12-2), Denver (14-12), Butler (15-5) and Fairfield (16-7). In that win over the Stags in Indiana, senior attacker Matt Howell had a career-high five goals and eight total points -- one short of the school record for points in a game. Overall, Howell is second on the team in scoring with 37 points on 20 goals and 17 assists. Sophomore attacker Patrick Walsh leads the Irish with 21 goals and 25 assists for 46 points. He ranks tied for fifth in the nation in point per game (4.18) and is sixth in assists per game (2.27). Six Notre Dame players have 14 or more goals. Sophomore attacker Brian Hubschmann is third on the team with 29 points on 18 goals and 11 assists. Senior midfielder Steve Clagett leads the team in groundballs with 40. Senior goalie Stewart Crossland has a 9.15 goals against average and a 59.6 save percentage.
The Maryland/Notre Dame Series History
* Maryland has won both games against the Irish which started a varsity men's lacrosse program in 1981. The teams began a yearly series last season with Maryland posting a 10-4 win at Moose Krause Stadium in Notre Dame, Ind. on May 3, 2003. A stifling defense shutdown the Irish's top two scorers as the then-No. 4 Terps gave coach Dave Cottle has 200th career coaching victory. The Terps' All-American defense of Michael Howley, Chris Passavia and Lee Zink along with goalie Danny McCormick held Patrick Walsh and Dan Berger pointless. Zink had a huge game with nine groundballs and seven caused turnovers. On offense, Justin Smith, Ryan Moran, Joe Walters and Brian Hunt each had two goals.
* Prior to last season's game at Notre Dame, the Terps and Irish played just once before in men's lacrosse, as Maryland eliminated Notre Dame from the 1995 NCAA Tournament with a 14-11 win at Byrd Stadium on May 20, 1995. The Terps advanced to the national championship game for the first of three times in a four-year span that season. In that game, Maryland built a 10-2 lead with 5:59 left in the third quarter before the Irish mounted a furious comeback to cut the score to 11-10 Maryland with 9:48 left in the fourth quarter. But Maryland held on behind the Nation's Outstanding Goalie of the Year Brian Dougherty, who made 16 saves. Ten different Terps scored goals including two each by Pat McGuire, Peter Hilgartner and Kip Fulks. Rob Chomo had four assists and a goal in the win.
Terps Perfect Vs. Great Western Lacrosse League
* Maryland enters the Notre Dame with perfect 15-0 record against GWLL foes. Earlier this season, Maryland topped Butler 19-4., for its 15th win vs. the league. Last season, the Terps beat Butler, Notre Dame and Ohio State in the NCAA Tournament first round. Overall, the Terps are 4-0 vs. Air Force, 3-0 vs. Butler, 2-0 vs. Denver, 2-0 vs. Notre Dame and 4-0 vs. Ohio State.
Coaching Match-up
* Maryland head coach Dave Cottle has a 10-2 lifetime record against Notre Dame. He went 9-2 vs. the Irish while he was coaching at Loyola from 1983-2001. Against Irish coach Kevin Corrigan, he was won nine of 11 games. He picked up his 200th career coaching victory against Notre Dame in the 2003 game.
* Now in his 22nd season as a head coach, Cottle comes into the game with a 212-80 career record for a 72.6 win percentage, third-highest among active coaches. His win total is eighth among active coaches. He is 31-10 (75.6) in his two-plus seasons at Maryland. Notre Dame's Kevin Corrigan is 149-93 (61.6) in 18 years as a head coach. He is in his 16th year at Notre Dame with a 139-78 (64.1) record.
Maryland-Notre Dame Connections
* With the second meeting of the Maryland-Notre Dame regular-season series there are several connections on the clubs to note.
* Notre Dame features one of Cottle's former players and former teammate and roommate of Terp assistant coach Paul Cantabene in Kevin Anderson, who played at Loyola from 1990-93. The Greyhounds, with Anderson and Cantabene, advanced to the NCAA championship game in 1990 under Cottle's guidance. Anderson and Cantabene were both named USILA All-Americans in their senior season of 1993.
* Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan is the nephew of former Maryland lacrosse stars from the 1950s -- Dick and George Corrigan, both of whom were All-Americans at Maryland as attackmen. Kevin Corrigan's father and the brother to Dick and George, is Gene Corrigan - - the former commissioner of the ACC and Notre Dame Athletic Director, who served as the host/emcee of the 2003 ACC Lacrosse Championships banquet three weeks ago in Charlottesville, Va.
* Maryland and Notre Dame also have many players who attended high school together. From Maryland, 12 players and from Notre Dame 14 players attended the same high schools as someone on the opposing roster. Check out the list in the PDF.
* Also of note, Maryland assistant coach Steve Gorski assisted at Broadneck High School prior to coming to Maryland last season where he coached Steve Panos, a Notre Dame sophomore midfielder.

More On The Super "O"
* The Terps have been sensational in the first half, as they have outscored opponents 77-39 in the first 30 minutes. In the Terps' 10 wins, they have outscored foes 68-23 in the first half.
* The second quarter has been the knockout quarter for the Terps as they have outscored their opponents, 39-15, in the second period. Against Georgetown, they built a 2-1 first-quarter lead to a 9-1 halftime lead with a 7-0 second quarter. Against Duke, it was more of the same, as the Terps outscored the Blue Devils, 6-1, in the second period to break a 4-4 tie and lead 8-4 at half. The Terps outscored Towson and UMBC, 3-1, in the second period on March 20. In the Butler win (March 23) , UM scored four goals in the second to build a 10-0 halftime lead. The Terps jumped out on Virginia, building a 6-1 halftime lead on the way to the 11-2 win at Byrd Stadium on April 3.
* In 12 games, the Terps have had 20 different goal scorers and 24 different Terps have points this season. On three occasions, nine or more players have scored goals in a game, showing the Terps are certainly spreading the wealth. In the win at Duke on March 6, 11 players scored goals including five players who tallied their first career goals: Mike Brown, Peter Ellis, Ryan Lang, Dave Matz and Michael Phipps.
* Nine Terps scored vs. Bucknell including Phipps and Matz with their second goals of the year. Sophomore Bret Caretsky (Northport, N.Y.) tallied his first career goal in the win.
* Against Butler, a season-high 12 players scored goals and 17 had points. Four players tallied their first career goals in the win: redshirt freshmen Brent Hargest (Cockeysville, Md.) and Patrick Howell (Arlington, Va.), freshman Thomas Alford (Washington, D.C.), who had two goals and junior college transfer Terence Dorsey (Baltimore, Md.).
* Maryland's extra-man unit is 9-for-36 this season (25.0 percent) through 12 games. They were a perfect 4-for-4 in the win at Georgetown, scoring once in each quarter. Joe Walters, Bill McGlone, Justin Smith and Ian Healy tallied the goals. The last time Maryland netted four extra-man goals was in the 2003 opener against Duke, as they went 4-for-6. The perfect day was especially sweet as the Terps worked hard on improving the EMO. Last season, they scored just four goals on their final 41 man-up chances spanning the final 10 games. Smith, Walters and Ritz each have two EMO goals.
Playing With the Lead
* Maryland has played with the lead most of the season and had barely trailed through the first eight games prior to the loss to Navy. The Terps have been ahead for 519:50 of 720 total minutes this season. They have only been behind for 124:08 total -- 17.2 percent of game action. That number was at just 3.7 percent prior to the loss to Navy, a game in which they never led. The Terps have been tied for 10.7 percent a total of 77:02 minutes -- mostly coming at the start of games.
* In six of 12 games, the Terps have never trailed, leading wire-to-wire, scoring first and never falling behind. They took the lead within the first minute against Towson and Bucknell.
* They have led for more than 94 percent of a game on five occasions.
The Terps' Stifling Defense
* With all the talk of the Terps' offense clicking at such a high rate, the heralded defense has been equally impressive this season. Maryland has been strong on defense in 12 games, limiting opponents to a 7.50 GAA, ninth in the nation. Over a six-game span from March 17 through April 3, the team GAA was 5.20 including the one of the nation's top goalie Tim McGinnis with a 4.69 personally in those games.
* Similar to last season, Maryland has held opponents scoreless for long stretches of game time. In 16 games last season, the Terps kept opponents scoreless for stretches of 20 or more minutes on 10 occasions. They have done it seven times already this season in 12 games -- with three streaks coming against Virginia.
* Against Georgetown, the Hoyas were held off the board for 23:22 spanning the first quarter to the early third quarter. The Hoyas trailed 9-1 at halftime, scoring just once in the game's first 34:05. Georgetown turned the ball over 25 times, with 14 of them being forced by a Terp. Senior captain and All-American Lee Zink led the way with four caused turnovers.
* Maryland pitched a shutout for the first 29:10 of the Towson game, before allowing a goal with 50 seconds left in the first half. Maryland then shutout the Tigers for the entire third quarter -- limiting them to one goal over the game's first 49:37.
* Against Bucknell, the Terps held the Bison scoreless until 11:54 left in the first half, marking the second game in a row they have blanked an opponent in the first quarter. Bucknell was also held to just one goal until 12 seconds were left in the first half -- a stretch of 29:48, allowing just one goal.
* At UMBC, it was more of the same, as the stifling defense kept the Retrievers off the board for 29:12 bridging the second through fourth quarters. After scoring early in the fourth quarter, Maryland locked them down for the next 10:40 -- allowing just one goal in 39:52. Tim McGinnis made eight saves in the fourth quarter at UMBC, allowing just four goals all game.
* The Butler game provided the best shutdown defense for the Terps, as they held the Bulldogs off the scoreboard for the first 39:11, shutting them out in the first half. Once Butler scored with 5:49 left in the third quarter, they did not allow another goal until the final minute of the quarter -- giving up one goal in 44:28.
* Maryland had its best defensive performance of the season against defending national champion Virginia as they held the Cavaliers to just two goals -- their lowest total since May 1984. The two goals allowed were the fewest by the Wahoos in the series since an 18-0 shutout in 1955. The Terps held Virginia scoreless for the first 24:41 of the game and then for the final 27:59. Maryland blanked Virginia's top seven scorers, holding them all pointless including All-Americans John Christmas, Matt Ward and Joe Yevoli.
* Despite Johns Hopkins outburst in the first quarter when they took an 8-1 lead, the Terps settled down and actually allowed just one goals over the final 27:07 including none in the final 16:37.
* In the ACC Tournament, the Terps defense was impressive for certain stretches of action. Against Duke in the ACC Semfinals, the Terps limited the Blue Devils to one goal in the final 20:58 of the game as the Terp rallied from a 6-5 deficit with 5:58 left in the third quarter to win 10-7. Against Virginia in the ACC Championship, Maryland held the Cavaliers scoreless for 20:43 from the early second quarter to mid-third quarter after a shootout first quarter which saw Maryland lead 7-5. After giving up the one third quarter goal, the Terps defense battened down and allowed just one goal over a 31:00 stretch into the fourth quarter.
Top-Notch Defenders
* In goal, graduate student and ACC All-Tournament selection Tim McGinnis has allowed six or fewer goals in six of 12 games this season. He had 13 saves at UMBC including eight in the fourth quarter. He blanked Butler for the entire first half. Against No. 4 North Carolina, he made 14 saves and gave up nine goals to the high-scoring Tar Heels and was named ACC Player of the Week. McGinnis had his best game as a Terps against Virginia, racking up 17 saves, allowing just two goals for a single-game 89.5 save percentage and was named the UnderArmour TerpVision Player of the Game. He won both games in the ACC Tournament with a combined total of 22 saves.
* Senior captains and All-Americans Chris Passavia and Lee Zink have been stellar this season. Both are nominees for the Tewaaraton Trophy as lacrosse's top player. They each were named to the All-ACC Team and the ACC All-Tournament Team this season. They have sliced and diced their opponents, combining to force 71 turnovers in 12 games. Passavia leads the team with 39. They have combined to scoop up 73 groundballs as well to rank second and third in the team - Zink (40) and Passavia (33). The duo has consistently shut down opponents' top scoring threats. They held Georgetown's All-American tandem of Walid Hajj and Neal Goldman to one assist between the two. Passavia forced Duke's top scorer Matt Danowski into six turnovers. Against Bucknell, the Terps held the nation's leading scorer Chris Cara to just one goal, as he came into the game averaging over six points a game. Butler's top player Kyle Tietjen, who came into the Maryland game with the most goals in the nation was also held scoreless. Against UNC, Scott Falatach was held to one assist by Zink, while that week's national top goal-scorer Jed Prossner was forced into six turnovers by Passavia. Against Virginia, Passavia and Zink held the Cavaliers top scorers and preseason All-Americans John Christmas and Matt Ward pointless and forced them into three turnovers apiece.
* Other defenders have stepped up their play including fellow senior captain Dave Wagner along with juniors Gavin Webb (Columbus, Ohio) and Tyler Hereth (Glastonbury, Conn.) and have been valuable contributors. In his first season as a starter, Wagner has 24 groundballs. Webb also has 24 groundballs in his time.
* Captain and short-stick defensive midfielder Paul Gillette has been steady and consistent as usual and leads the team with 57 groundballs through 12 games. He scooped up a career-high 10 groundballs vs. Duke in the ACC Semifinals and was awarded the game ball by coach Dave Cottle after the win. Gillette was named to the ACC All-Tournament team as he finished with 16 groundballs in two games. He also had big day vs. Duke in the regular-season with seven groundballs on March 6, as he also scored and assisted a goal. The team's top player according to the coaches also has assists in five of the last nine games and has seven total points, seeing time on the second midfield in addition to his defensive duties. Gillette is currently fifth on the Terps' all-time groundballs list with 207. He has 123 over the last two seasons.
* Short-stick defenders Drew Virk (Ross, Calif.) and Ryan Lang have been strong in helping the defense as well. Virk has 25 groundballs and has been an effective face-off man winning 23-of-45 draws for 51.1 percent. Virk had his first career point on an assist in the ACC Championship win over Virginia on April 25. He also won 7-of-13 draws in the title game.
Terps' 79th Season of Lacrosse
* The Terps have an all-time record of 647-207-4, dating back to the first varsity team in 1924 (a team was not fielded in 1944 and 1945 due to World War II). Maryland has finished every one of its previous 78 seasons with a .500 or better record, including last season when the Terps went 12-4. The program's 600th win came against Duke on April 21, 2000, 7-6 in the ACC Semifinals at Byrd Stadium.
* Since 2000, Maryland is 55-18 for a 75.3 win percentage. In the decade of the 1990s, Maryland recorded its most wins in any decade with a 95-47 record. The .669 winning percentage matched Maryland's win percentage of the 1980s when the Terps went 83-41 and also compiled a .669 win percentage.
Four Terps Named Preseason All-Americans
* The Terps placed two players on the Face-Off Magazine Preseason All-American list. Maryland will be led by its pair of preseason first-team All-American defensemen, Chris Passavia and Lee Zink . The Terps also feature two preseason Honorable Mention All-Americans in attacker Joe Walters and midfielder Justin Smith.
