FREDERICK, Md. - The University of Maryland baseball team dropped Duquesne University on Tuesday at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick, Md., by a score of 10-4. Senior Anthony Buffone played every position on the diamond against the Dukes.
Buffone cycled through a different position each inning against Duquesne (18-24) and made the first appearance of his career on the mound for the Terrapins (21-29). In the seventh inning, he pitched to one batter, allowing a double. The Duquesne player was subsequently thrown at third base, attempting a steal. Buffone finished the day with one hit and two runs scored.
The Terps started off hot at the plate, scoring four runs off of two home runs in the first inning. Sophomore Matt Maropis led off the game with a solo shot to left field for his third homer of the season. After Maryland's next two batters, Buffone and junior Will Frazier, hit back-to-back singles, junior Kevin Hart hit a three-run home run to left center for his seventh of the season.
Maryland expanded upon their lead in the third inning by scoring two more runs. Hart and sophomore Brian Jarosinski each recorded a pair of singled after the first two Terrapin batters failed to reach base in the inning. Junior Jason Maxey then walked to load up the bases for freshman Dan Melvin. Melvin capitalized by knocking in Jarosinski and Hart with a single to left field.
The Dukes cut the Terps' lead to 6-3 after brining in three runs in the fifth inning, including two on an Andy Gallina home run. Maryland responded with two runs on a Maxey home run to right center. Frazier, who walked to lead off the inning, scored on the play.
The Terrapins tacked on two additional runs in the seventh inning on Hart's second home run of the game and eighth of the season, marking the fourth time this season that he has notched two homers in a game. Buffone scored on the play after walking during his at bat. Hart finished the game with five RBI on three hits with three runs scored.
Freshman Casey Baron made his first career start, striking out three batters and allowing one earned run on three hits to the Dukes in 4.1 innings of work without walking anyone. Sophomore Seth Overbey came out of the bullpen in the fifth inning to throw 2.1 innings or scoreless relief, allowing just one hit en route to his first save of the season.
Buffone started the game in left field and moved to right in the second inning. After playing center field during the third inning, he moved to third base for the fourth. Buffone took second base during the fifth inning and short stop in the sixth. He started the seventh inning at first base and took the mound after the Terrapins had recorded two outs. In the eighth inning, Buffone moved to catcher, completing his rotation through each of the positions on the field.
This feat has only been achieved four times in Major League Baseball throughout history. The first to accomplish it was Bert Campaneris for Kansas City on September 8, 1965. Cesar Tovar was the next to play all nine positions in a game for Minnesota on September 22, 1968. More recently, Scott Sheldon completed the accomplishment for Texas on September 6, 2000 followed by Shane Halter on October 1, 2000 for Detroit
The Terps will be in action next when they host Georgia Tech at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Md., on Friday, May 21, for a 7 p.m. game.
