June 1, 2004

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland had three USILA First Team All-Americans for the first time since 1987 as senior defensemen Chris Passavia (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and Lee Zink (Rowayton, Conn.) were joined by sophomore attacker Joe Walters (Rochester, N.Y.) as the teams were released on Monday.

A total of eight Terps were honored by the USILA -- marking the second year in a row Maryland had eight All-Americans. Senior midfielder Paul Gillette (Millersville, Md.) and sophomore midfielder Bill McGlone (Swarthmore, Pa.) were named to the USILA Third Team.

Sophomore midfielder Brendan Healy (Great Falls, Va.), graduate goalie Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, Md.) and senior defenseman Dave Wagner (Severna Park, Md.) were all named honorable mention All-Americans.

All four starting members of the close defense were named All-Americans for the second year in a row. Last season, Passavia and Zink were honored along with Michael Howley and goalie Danny McCormick.

For Passavia, it was his third USILA All-American honor, as he was recognized as a Third Team All-American as a sophomore and a Second Team All-American as a junior. Passavia follows the most recent three-time Terp All-American, Michael Howley, who was named the National Defenseman of the Year in 2003. Passavia finished his career playing in 59 games with 53 starts. He scooped up 161 groundballs and caused nearly 100 turnovers. He led the Terps in caused turnovers this season with 51 and also had 47 groundballs along with three assists.

Zink earned his second USILA accolade as he was a Third Team All-American as a junior. Zink played in 60 of 61 possible games over his four years. He recorded 138 groundballs in his career. In 2004, he was second on the team in groundballs with 62 and second in caused turnovers with 42.

Walters continued his star-studded season as he was named ACC Player of the Year and ACC Tournament MVP. He was named an Honorable Mention All-American as a freshman. Walters piled up 46 goals and 22 assists for 68 points this season -- the seventh-best single-season point total in Maryland history. Overall, Walters has 79 goals and 114 points in just two seasons, giving him the most goals by any Terp in his first two years of competition.

Gillette earned his first All-American honors after one of the most solid and consistent careers as he played in all 61 games over his career. Gillette finished with 221 groundballs, the fifth most of any player in Maryland history. As a senior, he had a team-high 72 groundballs along with three goals and eight assists playing much of the year as a two-way player on offense and defense.

McGlone had a breakout season in his second collegiate year tallying 25 goals and 11 assists for 36 points. He scored a goal in every games this season and finished hot with 12 points in his final three games.

Along with fellow classmate McGlone, Healy had a career year with 18 goals and eight assists for 26 points. He had four multi-goal games this season including a hat trick at No. 1 Johns Hopkins in the 100th Anniversary game on April 17.

McGinnis earned his fourth USILA All-American honor, as he was a three-time All-American at Division III Gettysburg College. In his only season with the Terps, McGinnis was among the national leaders in goals against average (7.55) and save percentage (62.1) all season long. He went 13-3 in the goal, making 187 saves, starting all 16 games.

Wagner earned his first USILA citation after a solid campaign in his first as a starter on defense. The senior captain started all 16 games and grabbed 35 groundballs. Overall in his career, he played in 57 games and had 52 groundballs.
