Zink Named USILA National Defenseman Of The Year

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland's Lee Zink (Rowayton, Conn.) was awarded the Schmeisser Memorial Cup as the nation's top defenseman in men's college lacrosse in 2004, at the USILA Awards Banquet held in Rochester last Friday.

It marks the second year in a row a Terrapin has been named the nation's top defenseman as Michael Howley won the award last season. Zink is also the ninth Terp to win the award all-time. It marks the first time Maryland has captured the award in back-to-back years.

Zink was a First Team USILA All-American this season after being a Third Team member in 2003. The solid and strong stifling defender played in 60 of 61 possible games over his four years. He recorded 138 groundballs in his career. In 2004, he was second on the team in groundballs with 62 and second in caused turnovers with 42.

Syracuse's Michael Powell was named the National Player of the Year and Attackman of the Year. Johns Hopkins' Kyle Harrison was named Midfielder of the Year and Matt Russell of Navy was Goalie of the Year.

Zink was a first-round draft pick by the Baltimore Bayhawks of the Major League Lacrosse and has played in two games this season.
