A pair of Terrapins were named to the CoSIDA District II Academic All-District First Team on Friday. Graduate tennis player Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and junior gymnast Mandy Pascual (Aiea, Hawaii) were named to the district's first team and have been added to the national ballot as candidates for Academic All-American honors.
Marker is a graduate student with a 4.00 GPA in Decision Information Systems. She started the spring season ranked No. 44 in the nation and played mostly in top-two singles positions, finishing with a 18-16 singles record. She played in two national championship tournaments in fall 2003 and was an East regional finalist. Marker helped Maryland finish in top 50 . She graduated in the winter of 2003 with a perfect 4.0 and was awarded UM Presidential and Lockheed Martin Scholarship. She was also granted Weaver-James Corrigan Post-Graduate Scholarship. Marker served as treasurer of Student-Athlete Advisory Council and was a commencement speaker at R.H. Smith school graduation.
Pascual is a junior with a 3.94 GPA in chemical engineering. She tied her own school record on uneven bars (9.925) against Stanford by tying for first place. She finished third or higher in eight of 14 meets during the season and was the team's top finisher on bars at NCAA Regionals, scoring a 9.80. She scored 9.875 three times and 9.850 four times. Pascual was a first-team all-conference (EAGL) on uneven bars in 2004 and a member of the EAGL All-Academic team all three years. She earned Maryland/ICA Honor Roll all three years and was a honored with the 2004 Maryland Academic Achievement Award for gymnastics. She was a member of the 2003 CoSIDA Academic All-District II second team.
