WASHINGTON, D.C. - Former Maryland Terrapins standout Michael Howley has been hired as the assistant women's lacrosse coach at The George Washington University, head coach Chrissy Lombard announced. Howley replaces Lombard as squad's assistant coach after Lombard was elevated to the head job last month.

Howley recently completed a stellar playing career at the University of Maryland. As a defenseman, he started 60-of-61 career games for the Terrapins and earned United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-American recognition three times, including first-team accolades as a senior in 2003. That season he also was selected as the organization's national defenseman of the year. Howley earned All-ACC honors three times in his career and was the conference's Rookie of the Year in 2000. In addition, Howley was a two-time finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy, which is presented to the nation's top lacrosse player, and was a member of the 2002 Gold Medal-winning United States World Lacrosse Team.

Howley is currently a member of the Rochester Rattlers, after being selected with the eighth pick in the 2003 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Draft. He also competes for the Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League (NLL).

Earlier this year, Howley formed the STARZ Lacrosse Club for boys and girls living in the Maryland/Washington, DC area. As co-owner he oversees all aspects of the club and also serves as its director of coaching. Howley also started the company Top Notch Lacrosse Camps in November of 2003 and serves as its director.

Howley has worked as an instructor at several lacrosse camps for both boys and girls, including the Warrior Champ Camp, the Pro-Player Lacrosse Camp, the University of Maryland Lacrosse Camp, and the Adrenaline Lacrosse Camps.

Howley earned his bachelor's degree in criminology and criminal justice from Maryland in 2003 and works as a financial sales representative for John Hancock Financial Services in McLean, Va.
