COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Coming off a second round NCAA Tournament appearance and armed with a highly anticipated recruiting class which was ranked second in the nation, the Maryland women's basketball team opens the 2004-05 campaign on November 19, 2004 at Appalachian State. The Terps will make at least four television appearances, including a nationally televised contest from Comcast Center vs. Duke on Feb. 13 on ESPN2. "We are looking forward to this year's schedule. The competitive non-conference schedule will prepare us for the ACC slate," said third-year head coach Brenda Frese. "We are excited to welcome the new teams into the league and are also appreciative of the television exposure to showcase this young team." Maryland will be on the road for most of November, making its season debut at Comcast Center hosting Siena College on Nov. 21. The Terps then head west to play in the Coors Classic on Nov. 26-27 at the University of Colorado where they will face LSU who reached the 2004 Final Four and also eliminated UM from the NCAA Tournament. The University of Pennsylvania and the host Buffaloes round out the four-team tournament. Six of next seven games will be in College Park, including the annual Terrapin Classic, Dec. 29-30. Maryland will host in-state rival Loyola on Nov. 30 before heading out to play Xavier on Dec. 4. After having traveled to upstate New York last year, St. Bonaventure comes to Comcast Center on Dec. 7, followed by Monmouth on Dec. 12. The annual home tournament pits Marshall and Elon on the first day of action on Dec. 29 at 5 p.m., while the Terps square off with UMass at 7 p.m. The tournament champion will be determined on Dec. 30. With two new teams joining the highly competitive Atlantic Coast Conference, the Terps play the first of two meetings against newcomer Virginia Tech on Jan. 2, 2005. It will be team's first television appearance of the season as the game will be broadcast live from Blacksburg, Va., on the conference's Regional Sports Network (RSN). The Hokies will make their third-ever trip to College Park on Feb. 24. The Terps and Hokies have played one another the last two seasons, with VT winning both matchups. Maryland will also play Georgia Tech, Virginia and Duke twice this season. The Yellow Jackets host the Terps on Jan. 13 and then play again on Feb. 3 at Comcast Center. Maryland and Virginia continue its traditional rivalry beginning on Jan. 20 in College Park and close out the regular-season series in Charlottesville, Va., on Feb. 20. Last year, the team's split the series with each team winning on its own home court. Duke is also slated to play the Terps twice this season. The six-time ACC Champions host Maryland on Jan. 27. The two teams will clash in front of a national audience once again in College Park on Feb. 13. In 2004, 13,446 fans came to Comcast Center to see the Terps battle the Blue Devils, the second-largest crowd in ACC women's basketball history, breaking the Comcast Center women's basketball attendance record. With the new conference schedule format, Maryland will face North Carolina (Jan. 9), NC State (Jan. 23) and Wake Forest (Feb. 10) just once, with the three teams visiting College Park. The Tar Heels and Wolfpack both made NCAA Tournament appearances and both those games will be televised (RSN). Making two trips to the state of Florida, Florida State hosts the Terps on Jan. 16, as will league newcomer Miami on Feb. 17. The Hurricanes will be looking to avenge a first round NCAA Tournament loss as the Terps pulled out the one-point victory, 86-85, over Miami last year to advance in the tournament. The Terps' also travel to Clemson on Feb. 6. Maryland will take a break in the conference schedule to travel to the University of Arizona on Jan. 29 to face preseason Wooden Award candidate Shawntinice Polk. It will also be a homecoming for Frese as she makes a return to her alma mater. Closing out the regular season, the Terps host North Colorado on Feb. 28 before heading to Greensboro, N.C., for the ACC Tournament. The tournament will take place March 4-7. Looking to make back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament, Maryland was one of eight schools to be selected to host the first and second rounds of the tournament March 20 and 22. It will be the first time such an event will be held at the two-year old Comcast Center. The eight predetermined sites represents a format change from the 16 first- and second-round sites in previous years as eight teams will come to College Park to kick off postseason action. Frese returns seven letterwinners from last season's 18-13 squad which made an unexpected run to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Three starters also return, including sophomores Shay Doron (Great Neck, N.Y./Christ the King), Kalika France (Forestville, Md./Bishop McNamara) and senior Anesia Smith (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) and relied upon to lead a young squad which has eight freshmen and sophomores. Four new players join the team this season, rookies Laura Harper (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham), Crystal Langhorne (Willingboro, N.J./Willinboro), Ashleigh Newman (Shelbyville, Tenn./Shelbyville) and Jade Perry (Central City, Ky./Muhlenberg North). 2004-05 MARYLAND WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SCHEDULE
