COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Associated Press released its preseason poll for 2004 earlier today and the University of Maryland football team was placed 22nd in that initial ranking. The Terps will enter the season ranked in both major polls for the third consecutive year.
The Terrapins were ranked 20th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' poll earlier this month.
As in the other poll, USC took the top spot in the AP rankings, earning 48 of 65 first-place votes with Oklahoma (11), Georgia (5) and LSU (1) taking the others.
Four opponents (#5 Florida State, #10 West Virginia, #15 Clemson and #16 Virginia) on this year's Maryland schedule placed in the Top 25 while three others (NC State, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech) received votes.
The Terps have now been in each of the last three AP preseason polls as they were ranked 20th in 2002 and 15th a year ago. If Maryland can finish this season in the rankings, this year's senior class stands to be just the second to finish four straight years in the final polls and the first since Jim Tatum's Terps ran off five straight from 1951-55.
