COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior forward Abe Thompson is one of 25 players included on the second annual watch list of candidates for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy, the most prestigious individual honor in intercollegiate soccer. The list was compiled by a coaching panel for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), which serves as the official selection body for the MAC's Hermann Trophy.
Thompson, a semifinalist for the award in 2003, fought through an injury-plagued junior season but still scored five goals and five assists to help lead Maryland to its second straight College Cup appearance. Thompson ranks among the Top 10 at Maryland in career goals, assists and points.
The 25 players are considered to be among the top players entering the 2004 college season and are the ones to watch for outstanding play this fall. A list of 15 semifinalists will be announced in November, with three finalists selected in early December. The winner will be announced at a dinner at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo., on Jan. 8, 2005.
