The University of Maryland will conclude its three-game homestand this Wednesday, Sept. 15, 7 p.m., against the Loyola Greyhounds. The Terps (4-0) are coming off a pair of victories at the Maryland/adidas Classic, including an impressive 5-2 win over St. John's. Loyola (2-2) dropped a tough 2-1 decision to No. 5 Santa Clara in its last outing.
Maryland leads the all-time series with Loyola 23-8-6, including a 4-0 win over the Greyhounds at Ludwig Field last season. The Greyhounds last won at Ludwig Field in 2001 when they eliminated the Terps from the NCAA Tournament. Since that game, Maryland has won 29 of its last 30 at home.
With the victories over the weekend, Maryland moved up to No. 2 in the NSCAA coaches' poll.
Up Next: Maryland will open ACC play when it travels to Raleigh, N.C., to take on NC State.
The Weekly Notebook
Maryland captured its second tournament title in as many weeks by winning a pair of games at the Maryland/adidas Classic. Penn State finished second, St. John's was third and Georgetown was fourth.
Abe Thompson and Jason Garey shared MVP honors after scoring eight of Maryland's nine goals in the tournament. Garey scored the first hat trick of his career against the Red Storm.
Ian Rodway and Domenic Mediate were also named to the all-tournament team. It was the second straight week the duo was honored with all-tournament accolades. Mediate had a pair of assists and Rodway was again a key cog to the Terp defense and possession.
The 5-2 win over St. John's was the first time the Red Storm had surrendered more than four goals since October, 1984.
Maryland improved to 25-0 all-time against Georgetown with a 4-2 win over the Hoyas.
The four goals allowed by the Terps in consecutive games is the most since 2002 when Maryland gave up three goals to Wake Forest (Sept. 27, 2002) and one to North Carolina (Oct. 5, 2002). It was the first time Maryland surrendered consecutive multiple-goal games since 2001 (Oct. 3 vs. Princeton and Oct. 5 vs. North Carolina).
A.J. Godbolt had a career-high three assists against St. John's. His three assists were the most by a Terrapin at Ludwig Field since Sumed Ibrahim and Siba Mohammed each accomplished the feat against Manhattan in 2001. Chris Lancos set his career mark for points in a game with four after his one-goal, two-assist performance against Georgetown.
Garey Earns Conference And National Honors
Jason Garey was named national player of the week on Sept. 13 by College Soccer News after his efforts at the Maryland/adidas Classic. Garey scored the first hat trick of his career and posted a career-high seven points against St. John's. He finished the tournament with five goals and one assist.
Garey was also named the ACC Player of the Week on Sept. 13 for the 11-point effort at the Maryland/adidas Classic. It was his first career conference player of the week honor.
Getting Offensive
Maryland has proven so far in the young season to have one of the most explosive offenses in the country. The Terps have the highest scoring offense (5.00) in the country as of Sept. 12.
The Terps' total of 16 goals in three games is the most in a three-game span since 1970. The total is also the highest three-game total to begin a season since 1965 when Maryland scored 16 goals in the opening three games of that campaign.
Maryland's 20 goals in four games is the most in a four-game span since the national championship year of 1968. That year, the Terps opened the season with 22 goals in four games with wins of 3-2 and 3-1, before exploding to 6-1 and 10-1 victories in the next two games.
