Columbia, Mo. -
The Maryland wrestling team picked up its first two dual victories of the season against Utah Valley State and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville but fell to No. 17 Missouri Sunday afternoon at the Missouri Duals. The Terps won 41-6 over SIUE and 35-9 over Utah Valley State before dropping a 47-0 to the host Tigers.
Mark Eberstein (184) had two pins on the day for Maryland. Sean Carr (133), Adam James (157), Luke Stauffer (174), Eberstein (184) and Jerry Afari (197) each were double-winners on the afternoon.
Maryland (2-3) wrestled without a heavyweight in all three duals, resulting in six-point forfeits in each match.
In the first dual against SIUE, the Terps scored bonus points in five of the eight matches wrestled (the Cougars forfeited at 149, the Terps forfeited at 285). Jeff Oldham scored seven takedowns in his major decision over Scott Audo at 125. After a decision by Sean Carr at 133, Andrew Schlaffer (141) and Adam James (157) tallied back-to-back pins to help extend the Maryland lead to 25-0. Jason Kiessling (165) scored five nearfall points in his 12-0 win over Matt Oliva, and Luke Stauffer won in overtime 10-8 on a takedown with 37 seconds on the clock. Mark Eberstein (184) needed just 33 seconds to pin Cory Scott and Jerry Afari (197) scored three takedowns and didn't allow any offensive points in his 6-4 win.
In the second dual, the Wolverines took an early 3-0 lead after Talon Vickers scored five third period points to defeat Kevin Vinh 9-4 at 125. It was all Maryland the rest of the way, though, as the Terps won the next seven matches. Carr scored three takedowns in his 6-3 win at 133 pounds, and then Charlie Pinto (141) scored a second period pin over Justin Rawle. Jerad Villecco (149) scored five takedowns and recorded two, three-point nearfalls on his way to a 17-2 technical fall.
James (157) fell behind 3-0 in the second period, but rallied in the third with an escape and a takedown to force overtime. In the one-minute sudden victory period, James scored a takedown with just nine seconds remaining for the 5-3 win. Rob Parker (165) and Schlaffer (174) each won by decision, before Eberstein (184) and Afari (197) had back-to-back pins to close out the scoring for the Terps.
In the final dual, the 17th-ranked Tigers earned extra points in eight of the nine bouts en route to blanking the Terps, 47-0. Vinh nearly scored points for the Terps with nearfalls late in the third period, but he was unable to pull off the victory in an 11-9 decision at 125 pounds.
